Hi folks,

As I'm pretty new to the Accord and Honda in general I've done some initial snooping and have seen the phrase "timing belt change" in a couple of places. I gather that 70k is the time to get it done, which means that within the next 6 months or so, my 65k Accord will probably need this doing.

So is it worth (given the age of the car) taking to Honda and getting them to do it, or would my local garage (who fix up Porsches pretty much all day long) be adequate to the job. I'd have a crack myself, but have no tools/aptitude for things mechanical......

I wouldn't attempt the timing belt yourself if you are not too mechanically minded.. Any competent garage should be able to do it though, and I would also advise having the water pump changed at the same time. Use a genuine Honda kit though - ensure you change the belt and tensioners.

Hi Mick,

I dont have a 6th Gen, but I did it myself on my 2.2 Prelude, a bit fussy and you have to ensure on the Preludes that a new pre-tensioner is installed (not sure if its the same on Accord 2.0), it took me about 4 hours and was a bit of a pain without a ramp.

As for your local dealer, I would think they would be more than capable, but check the price first as Honda do it for £275 under the Honda Happiness and that includes everything that is needed (all parts and Labour.)

I did the Water pump on mine as well Fahad, but apparently the dealer said it wouldnt need doing. Might be different on the 2.0 accord though.

As Fahad says, if your not confident dont do it yourself as if you get it wrong it could cause catastropic damage to the Valves and Engine!

Thanks fellas! That £275 from Honda looks like it might be the way to go anyway. No pain involved, and they know what they are doing. Honda happiness indeed! :D

I'm not sure on the setup on each car Nick, but as a rule if the water pump is being driven off the cambelt then it's a good idea to change it at the same time to save on the labour.. Water pumps have a limited life anyway and the bearings tend to start going after 80k..

True Fahad, thats why I did mine anyway, but Honda did say it wasnt worth it. I have always done it since my brother had his VW Golf Cambelt done then 2 months later the waterpump failed. VW though did say it should be changed but on his but the so called VW specialist garage didnt change it. In the end they agreed to cover the labour!

Honda Happiness all the way I would say as you change all belts (prob heading towards £100 alone before any Labour!)

Good Luck Mick

Maybe the Honda water pump bearings are better quality than the VW's but the VW's definitely have a limited life as I've always changed them and you can actually hear their bearings start to whine after 80k.. but then they're only £20 for decent quality replacements so for the sake of £20 it's just peace of mind.

£20... not for my dodgy imported Prelude. Honda spanked me for £89 :(

But for the Accord I would just get one as you said Faddy

That price was motor factors dude so I suspect VW new prices are also in the region of £80..

I have replaced myself the timing belt in my 6th gen Accord, its not hard to do it if you have some mechanical skills, time and tools. Also, I when I went to Honda asking for a price, they said they never replace the water pump, but just as a precaution, I decided to replace it, by an after-market pump, as they wanted about 200€ just for the pump...

When i was having my cambelt done i was told by all the Honda dealers i called that the Honda Happiness price was only for the 2 belts supplied and fitted.
Tensioners and waterpump are extra. I had all mine done by a local mechanic in the end with a Gates cambelt kit and Blueprint waterpump.

Amen to that^ i did the water pump at 73k along with the timing belt, 92k and still all is good.

I would advise a garage normally but timing belt is in the top 10 important not to F*** up jobs for sure so yeah go Honda
