07 Diesel Tourer
Hi all

Just joined today, I've been lurking for the last couple of weeks whilst considering buying an accord, finally took the plunge on a 07 diesel tourer and managed to strike what I thought at the time was a decent deal but since then have noticed the clutch slipping (I didn't pick this up on the test drive as I stupidly managed to do it during rush hour!). Now I'm not too annoyed with myself as the rest of the car seems fine and I'd sort of factored in a clutch change or other largish job would need doing in the first few months as the cars done 105000 mls, but what has absolutely shocked me is the costs involved. I'd scanned some of the threads on here beforehand and had a figure somewhere in the region of £500 which I can cover (once I sell my motorbike!) but the prices I've been quoted are much higher than that, some up to £800-900. Honda (Northampton) themselves initially quoted £900 and when I queried it and mentioned "Honda Happiness" (no idea what this is, just seen it mentioned on these forums!) the price dropped to £750. Still steep, but manageable. But it seems that almost everyone wants to do the DMF at the same time regardless of any checks (in fairness, the Honda chap said that they don't always have to be replaced), I understand that it makes sense to do both together but it doubles the price, and if you don't know until the cars in bits whether its beyond limits, then your sort of committed, aren't you?

So I'm after a bit of advice from those that have lived through these problems, namely:

What sort of price should a clutch only change be nowadays? (some of the threads I read are a few years old so I'm ***uming the prices will have changed a bit)

In peoples experience, if I don't do the DMF (***uming it is within limits) at the same time, am I right in thinking it should last at least as long as the new clutch? If not, what are the likely symptoms that its failed?

I'm a bit concerned that Honda have two prices for the same job, and if you don't know about HH, you pay more? Is this correct and normal practice for them? I must admit, I've now got doubts about using them... Can anyone tell me a bit more about HH, what it means, where its relevant and if it even still exists?

Thanks in advance for any help, and sorry for the long post!

First thing I would do is take back where you bought it from and see if you can sort something out with them. Has for the clutch honda will do at fix price of £540
Me personally would buy from eurocarparts you can get a LUK clutch with bearing this is the same clutch Honda use for £140 then get a good indie to do it the dual mass fly wheel coming up at £383. So probably for clutch your talking about £380 for clutch fitted and both £800.

You don't necessarily need to replace the DMF when the clutch is replaced, although some may see that as prudent. Honda themselves would not routinely do this, but would instead inspect the DMF when accessible during the clutch replacement... there is a 'free play' check to see if the DMF sprung mechanism is within limits (which I seem to recall is 6mm - 36mm?). If the garage doing the work are experienced with the i-CTDi, then personally I would let them make the decision about DMF replacement.

I sort of burnt my bridges there as in order to bring the price down to my max, I waived the service and warranty, but it got another £500 off so I was happy to take the risk. When you say that Honda have a fixed price for a clutch repair, where can I find that info? I spoke to my local Honda garage and was originally quoted over £900 to replace the clutch only and was told to double the amount for the Dual Mass Flywheel if required. Another quote I've had is around £950 for both, I'd rather go with Honda if I can but that's a massive difference.

EDIT - I've just noticed you have a newer diesel Accord and therefore my reply should be ignored! Sorry.

Hi, just seen your edit, is there a difference then? I have the facelift model.

I did my clutch and DMF at HH, but I had two jobs done, first one was just clutch which cost me something about £600 under offer honda happiness, but during that job I've been advised that there is play on the DMF, but it's still ok so I just changed clutch, after 3 weeks or so, when clutch bed in I noticed that there is still clutch slip, went back to HH, and unfortunately I had to do same job again plus new DMF so it cost me £1200, so my advice is do it right and change clutch with DMF, I'm not saying you need to do it at HH, but change everything, or if you planing to increase power in future I'd go with some kit from CG Motorsport and instead of DMF I'd go for SMF ;-)

Why do you want to go through honda???? Garages are changing clutches day in day out don't get dragged in by honda use this SPECIAL ALIGNMENT tool any decent indie has this, All Honda dealers are suppose to be doing price matching but in my experience they don't. you say cars done 105k so dealer stamp not really that important now just keep your receipt. Phoenix motors honda specialist Manchester doing it for £600 that's the clutch and £999 for both obviously HH is nearer so they might price match???

These clutches need to be pre loaded correctly and honda have this specific tool. However that does not mean a non honda dealer mechanic cannot do it.

I think the fixed price of £540 was previously honoured, think its gone up now.

we have a member on here who runs a shop, he's an ex honda technician. Maybe drop him a line and see what he can do. He's based in Oldham and username is 'hondavtecr'

Thanks for all the replies gents, I've found a couple of places that will do both for around the £1000 mark, it makes sense to do both so I'll set about getting the funds together and book it in, thanks again for the advice

Does seem expensive.
I found an LUK clutch 'kit' for £95 llus VAT which is a bonus. As mine isnt slipping, just a high biting point so im preparing lol

That is suspiciously cheap!

The biting point is usually quite high on these due to the self-adjuster built into the pressure plate. Hard to tell when it's going to start slipping until it does and, even when it does, often the self-adjuster belatedly takes action and makes everything good again. It isn't a terribly great design really, despite Honda having three attempts at getting it right (305, 315 and 325 versions).

Yeah a good friend of mine works at Unipart ;)

I know this is an old'ish post, but no one has replied, and if like me you do a search for 'clutch' this thread pops up, so I'm posting here ..........

The clutch on my 2007 ictdi Tourer with 163,000 miles on the clock, started slipping about a 1000 miles ago, and occasionally the clutch pedal refused to return and I would have to pull the pedal back up with my foot. So I knew that a clutch replacement was imminent, but where to go to have it done?

I hunted around for parts and quotes and the cheapest quote I got was £200 for labour - from Fahad on the forum, thanks Fahad - plus I supply clutch kit and the gearbox oil. So it would probably have cost me around £400 in total and I'd have to drive to, and leave the car in Bradford for the day.

I rang a Jap car specialist in Hull (Japtech) and they quoted me £450 plus gearbox oil for a pattern Blueprint clutch kit.

I then rang my local Honda dealer Westgate Honda, and got a quote for £640 inclusive and the use of a courtesy car. My har has full Honda history so I wanted to keep that, and have the confidence of having the job done properly. The car was in for the day, went and picked it up after work and spoke to the Technician who had done the work. He told me that it was the original clutch in the car, he showed me my old clutch. There was plenty of friction material left on the clutch plate, but the pressure plate had warped - a not unusual problem apparently. It was the warped plate that had caused the slipping problem, the plate was only engaging on the outer 1/3 of the pressure plate, the technician told me that 160,000 miles was not exceptional, he'd replaced clutches on cars that had done 200,000 miles on the original clutch! Also the DMF was fine.

I know have peace of mind that the work has been done correctly, I've got the confidence from Honda Technician that DMF was fine, all the bolts they removed were replaced with brand new bolts - would a back street garage have done that? He also told me that that service a local accord that has done 278,000 miles on the original engine, and the car runs perfectly, he said change the oil and filter regularly, use e right oil and these engines will go on forever.

So in short, clutches on these cars last for ages, the £640 price is a nationwide Honda price, so all Honda dealers should be the same price.

I'm a happy man -:)

Does anyone have any contact details for 'hondavtecr'? Ive tried messaging him as I have very similar symptoms and wanted someone to fault diagnose it correctly.
