Accord 2009 ex idtec
Hi everyone, I purchased a 2009 ex model with 68,000 miles on the clock two weeks ago. I absolutely love the car and all the goodies that come with it. However I have one problem that is really ruining the driving experience of the car. On the motorway above 75 m.p.h . the car starts to vibrate and gets worse as you increase speed. I also noticed it worsens if you are going around a bend. I have had the front tires replaced as they had wear on the inner edge and had all four tires balanced and 4 wheel alignment performed. However to my dismay the problem remains. From reading 7th gen section the most likely problem now is the drive shafts. Just wondering do they give trouble on the 8th gen as well. Any help really appreciated!!

Neil this is low mileage for the drive shaft to fail.Where does the vibration seem to be coming from like the steering or else where.
Also does the car pull to any side of the road.

Hi neil , i have the same problem , only covered 66000 miles , 4 wheel alingment stated that front wheels were perfectly in line however the camber was slightly out on one side , unadjustable without adding additional camber adjusters onto the suspension , its either that or the drive shafts ....both are a costly fix :-( by all counts the accords are dead sensetive to any wheel misalingnment , my solution is to drive everywhere at 85-90 where it evens out lol

The whole car seems to be shuddering. The steering vibrates but so does the seats and even the key in the ignition!! The car is not pulling either way and drives straight. As I said it does seem to get worse when I turn the steering going around a bend or accelerating.

Was looking at the price of drive shafts on lings honda and they are over 500 euros each!!
I bought the car privately so cant take it back to garage. Was an Audi owner before this (lots of problems) and one of the main reasons for going with Honda was that they are known for their reliability.

Neil you could try changing the front wheel to the rears to see if this helps. This will eliminate a buckled alloy.
Also get the car on a ramp to see any signs of play in the suspension front and back.

Thanks Brett, will try that and see if it improves. Would the wheel balancing not have shown up a buckled alloy?

Quite possible but it all depends on how good the guy doing the wheel balance was.

The standard of wheel balancing is terrible.

Like Brett said, swap fronts with backs. If the problem is still there then it's probably a driveshaft.

Very true Jon there was a member hear a wile back that went to about 4 garages for wheel balance.
After the 4 time the garage got it spot on so it's possible this is the cause.

Balancing. Trust me on this

also think its highly unlikely to be a drive shaft, get it to a proper place for hunter 4 wheel alignment and check all your tyres for any bulges.

Could be a driveshaft, didnt Lee (impne) with the 8th gen diesel tourer Type S have to have one replaced?

If the car has been whacked on a kerb a few times, a driveshaft can start to fail.

Thanks guys will try getting the tyres balanced again and see if this improves the situation.
Had the car tracked already with a john bean 4 wheel laser alignment machine, is the hunter that much better as there is not many of that type of machine in Ireland.

most garages in Ireland are useless for tracking.

all they do in Ireland is standard wheel tracking, the Accord needs camber, castor, toe all spot on.

A hunter system is what you need, you will get before and after results.

Hi all, I got the tires rebalanced but the vibration was still there. I then swapped the front tires with the back tires. Massive improvement, the steering wheel no longer vibrates and the car is so much nicer to drive.

However the vibration is now in the back of the car!! I'm relieved as at least its not the drive shafts. In my opinion the vibration is being caused ( correct me if i'm wrong) by,

1. Back tires are still not properly balanced ( unlikely as all the tires were balanced by same person)
2. The back tires are brand new, but are a cheap chinese make. ( however the vibration was there ,if not as bad before I put on these tires )
3. One of the back alloys is buckled as Brett suggested. ( would the tire fitter not have noticed the damaged alloy )

Should I switch the back wheels to the front one at a time to see if I can pinpoint which one is the problem?
If it is a buckled alloy can you buy a single one and how much would it cost? ( standard 17 inch honda alloy 225 50 17)

Thanks for all the help.

Great news as it do not sound like the drive shaft.
It's likely what I said one of the wheels is damaged.
Try swapping one from back to try then the other one.
Was the 4 tyres all the same brand from new.
Also yes you can buy single alloys as well
Sorry miss read the new tyres are now on the rear.

I had this problem and found that one of the rear tyres had a bobble in it , so changed the tyre and had a full wheel balance(front and rear ) and now the car drives perfect and smooth :)

I had this problem and eventually found it to be the rear tyres. I replaced them and the car was then silky smooth. The weird thing was you would swear blind the vibrations were from the front not the rear.

I'd take the tyres back and pay the extra cash for some better tyres I'm sure the smooth ride will be worth it.

Hi guys just a final update on vibration issue. I brought the car to an alloy wheel repair specialist and got him to check all four alloys for buckles.

He found every wheel was buckled, with one especially bad. He straightened and balanced all the wheels, and commented on the bad job the previous garage had done trying to balance the wheels. It cost 150 Euros which was money well spent.

Its like driving a totally different car, it is now so smooth on the road even with my cheap Chinese rubber!!

Just a thank you for all the help and hope this might help someone else with the same issue.

Great result and glad your sorted to start enjoying your car.
