Recently, sometimes this would happen either as soon as i start up the car. Sometimes it wouldnt at all and carry on as the car idles. But as the car warms up the noise dissapeared. Reving, turning will change pace of noise. I replaced my timing. Belt, auto tensioner and water pump at the same time not long ago :S this only started happening a week or two ago when its cold weather. Any thoughtts guys? Much appreciated!

Heres a video of it. The squeek is coning from the right side of the engine right from the belt area

To be specifiic it seems to be coming directly from/under the circular onject that spins a thin belt. Im not sure if thats the timing belt, i dont think it is as timing belts are wider when i boyfht them

I'm not familiar with the h22 engine but it sounds like you are describing the power steering pump? Lets call the circular object a 'pulley' which the belt goes around its circumference. Just left of the pulley is the body of the pump and some hoses will be attached, if you follow them they should go to the power steering fluid reservoir off to the right hand side of the engine bay - also check this has fluid in it.

When the engine is NOT running can you press on the belt on its longish side and see if it has any deflection. I think on mine it should deflect about 1cm with a firm press, if it feels like it doesn't move at all then its possibly too tight and could have affected your pump bearings. A belt that's too loose can also cause a squeal to if there is too much slop.

I guess if you removed the belt briefly it will eliminate that as a possible source of the noise. You could try and listen directly to the pump with a mechanics stethoscope or improvise with a long screwdriver whilst the engine is running - but if you try and listen with the engine running be careful with long or loose items not getting tangled in the pulley/belt.

Defiantly sounds like a pump or belt but hard to tell the location on the vid.
Also get someone to turn the steering wheel from left to right to see if the tone changes.

happened again today but only this time it was a 2 second noise. Steering the wheel can make different noises and tones also. the sound is coming from right where the belt is if you put your head right near it lol.
Havn't checked the power steering fluid yet but a simply topup can prevent this sound??
I will check pressing the timing belt with the car off and see if theres any play, etc.

change ya Fan belt mate. there less than a tenner at most places, just pop a spanner on the tensioner bolt, lift the spanner up and pop belt off. fit the same way u took it off. less than a 10 min job mate :)

Thanks for the info !
Have checked for any play in. The sepentine/alrernator belt and there seems to be barely any play at all, its solid!
I checked this because it sems to come directly from there and a mate said he knows what sound it is. ( the belt that is visible on the bottom right side of the engine when popping the bonnet.
I will look further and reach garages and see what they say and update.

The fan belt? Where about is thatt? If it is that ide be happy if the low cost to replace :)

the fan belt aka Aux belt is the belt that does powersteering, alternator and crank ect.

its that thats squeeking, cheap to buy and 10 mins to fit.

I dont know why people are telling you to check play in pullys ect ect. its just the fan/aux belt mate, change it and its done ;)

Tony u really do sound confident that it is that belt!

The power steerig belt is also known as Aux belt? If thas the case i will purchase one asap! 10 mins to fit? Well as long as it isnt difficult or doesnt cost too much ide love to skip on forking a load of money for labour :)

My mate did mention fan belt however so it does see like im getting the right answer from people. I will order a fan belt very soon! However as im not much of a mechanic ( i tend to watch people complete jobs before i start myself ) how much would labour cost for a garage to fit the belt? Thanks guys! :)

Power Steering Belt it is (just to eliminate confusion)....fan belts were on cars even prior to power steering so you see how it can get confusing, ( its a generic name although used to apply to driving the fan, via a belt before they were powered by an electric motor and having nothing to do with other ancillary pumps although the term is typically used for any engine belt - depending on who you are talking too. My 6th Gen has a separate belt for the PowerSteering and Alternator/AirCon compressor).

Here's your part here.

Hi guys it seems to be making sense bow. The aux/fan belt also now known as the power steering belt? I seen thos part too i didnt know what it was called but i was sure it was that one i jus has to confirm. If thas the case it would be okay to get it from here? I usually get some from this site for good prices. The belts are branded gates and those timing abd balancer belts i got from there too.

The bottom one.

What do you guys think?

Seems to be the one Lou, but lets have one of the Type R guys (Tony? ;) ) confirm it.

I put a PS Pump Sound Check in the DIY section for you to let you hear mine (rem I've got a different engine so won't look identical around the engine bay)

So just to confirm. What tony suggested was change fan aka aux belt. In this car - honda accord type r, a fan belt will be the power steering pump to purchase yes?

I hear another name for it called a serpentine belt? Thanks for the knowledge guys :)

whats ya reg number lou?
the h22 normally has 2 belts but sometimes has 3 depending on spec, 1 for powersteering and 1 that does alternator and crank and so on.

if u give me ur reg ill check ur set up quickly mate ;)

My reg is X636 WDM . Thanks tony i will buy the exaxt part when youve made sure! Really
Hope its as easy as it sounds!

Hey tony. I am unsure because i hear some atr have aircon and some dont. I have the aircon switch in the car but i think its dead atm lool i never use it. Hope that helps.

ok, so most likely have aircon fitted. tomorrow, just pop the bonnet and see if u have 2 rads. 1 for coolant and the other is for the aircon.
let me know, if u dont know just upload a pick of the engine bay and 1 pic focused to the rad area ;)

Wow andy your too kind! I guess its called the power steering pump belt after all?

In that image can you see the two hoses at the front that appear chopped, sort of curving to the right. Those lead down to the AC compressor so if you are struggling to see it follow them. The radiators on mine are almost sandwiched at the front, without experience and at a quick glance you could be forgiven for thinking there is only one.

If u have aircon you may as well by the 3 belt kit, as I can't see your carin person to advise which belt to replace.
Most other car firms use just 1 belt that goes on around all the Auxiliary items, but Honda went a little o.c.d with their auxiliary belt set up lol

Oh I was thinking, pop into your nearest parts place or motor factors and ask them if they supply the belt as some other firms may have made just 1 belt that goes round all items

The pulley of the PS pump isn't aligned with the pulleys of the Aircon and Alternator so its going to be a 2 belt job unfortunately if you go down that road. :(

You'll need to get the tension correct aswell, too tight can lead to premature bearing wear and too loose will cause squeal and potentially poor performance of the auxiliary item(s)

agree andy, its easy for someone like me to find and fix but i do forget that some people arnt as handy with motors :(

just look at the pic u posted.
so best off buying the 2 belt kit on jap parts as the power steering belt goes to the crank shaft pully, then the alternator goes round the aircon pully then to the crankshaft pully.

;)

So tony after discussing what belts to buy, i should get the power steering pump belt and alternator belt?
I think ill get it off the gates brand as they come a good price :)

Can anyone mention how much labour wouldbe roughly IF i decided to take it to a garage to fit both belts? Thanks
