Hey all,

Well after this morning putting me in a bad mood i deceided that it was time to do something constructive with the car.

So i cleaned the EGR plate and gas holes. There are 4 of them and 3 of them were comletely blocked. Like solid. Couldn't even put a screw driver in them! So here are a few pics.

First remove this thingy cuase it's in the way. It's held on with 2 screws under the fuel rail.

The remove the plastic electric thingys and undo all 7 bolts (10mm) and remove the egr plate. It'll be FULL of carbon some solid and some a kind of spongy consistency.

I highly reccomend everyone to do this.

The car feels better and there is no hesitation or feeling of misfire. It pulls more freely through the rev range and especially once in Vtec.

Si,.

P.S Do it! Do it NOW!!!!!

Nice write up. Excellent use of the word 'thingy' :)

Is this also recommended - or not required - on the F20B6? (The 2.0 SOHC engine of the same era)

Thanks, CJ - will go looking for it. And try and do it before Winter really sets in...

I never realised you were hands on dude. Good on ya

might do this on the prelude as it has the same engine. Did you have to replace any gaskets or anything?

F series ..saj did a DIY somewhere?

Can't seem to find it. Just searched for EGR (too short to be found by the forum software) and then looked through saj's content, and still couldn't find it.

Any clues? Might it have been on the old forum?

Might be different on the Prelude, unless i didn't realise the Prelude had an EGR plate too. The only thing i cleaned on the Prelude was an EGR valve that was on the left hand side of the engine held in by 3 almost impossible to get at bolts. Prelude owners normally clean it out just before the MOT as it helps with the emissions.

Not too sure to be honest, just ***uming without looking at the engine. It just had an MOT so might just clean the EGR Valve for safe measure. It so badly needs a PCV valve at the minute as the current one has had it.

I'll have a check on the weekend and let you know.

Thanks for the info though

Aas far am i'm aware there is no differnce in block design between the Prelude H22A5 and the ATRs' H22A7. The only differnce is a diffent map, pistons, and head. It should have one. It's on eof the best things i've done to my car.

It just feels more 'normal' to drive...well, as normal as an ATR can be :p

Shabbz you should really replace the gasket, but it's a copper one so it sturdy. just don't bend the bloody thing  I didn't bother and no-one on the ATR forum has either...apart from the bloke who took it off and then lost it

Is there an EGR valve as well then on the ATR? On the Prelude forums, everybody only cleans the valve, hence i didn't even know about the EGR plate until i read about it on atr.org!

Yup, the valve is other big round thing on the left hand side of the fuel rail (as you look at the engine), it has 2 bolts to undo (both i think 10mm). I didn't have time to do mine as i had to go get the missus, but i'll be doing that the next time i get a spare afternoon.

You can't get into the valve to clean it but you can clean all the depostis round the bottom. I'll post some pics of it when i've done that one too. But it really isn't hard at all.

If i wasn't so stupidly OCD with my car it'd have only taken an hour tops to do the EGR plate.

might be worth having this in the diy section, sure there was another one too...

This is indeed a sterling write-up. It's old, before my time. I've noticed it before. I don't know if someone's just moved it before I typed this, however, exec, it does appear to already be in the 6th gen DIY section for you.

Great work Si.

:)

Edit: There you go, Brett beat me to it ;)

Hiya,

I'm trying to carry out this procedure on my 1998 1.8SE but can't seem to locate the parts as above very clearly. (i say 98, but no ****** seems to believe my car existed before 1999. Lot's of fun when dealing with motor factors and getting parts!)

Here be my engine bay, a familiar sight no doubt:

I can't for the life of me figure out how to actually get to the plate. So many walkthroughs are either not for this specific engine, or entirely skip out some rather important details. Like how the hell that wiring harness gets out of the way (black bit behind the block). I can obviously unplug various bits like the plugs to egr valve, iacv underneath etc but it seems to have bits going into the block too. I don't want to go pulling at it like a man possessed without checking with some folks that have done it first! :)

I can't identify the part in this very thread that you need to undo two bolts from to move out the way, the ETCG video seems to have a whole chunk missing and not told anyone (obvious as the rocker cover isn't there but still there's other bits very different to what's under my bonnet!).

Any slightly more idiot-proof guides about? :D Pictures are best, big bold letters good, videos excellent ;)

The above can be disregarded, found an excellent guide, probably won't allowed to post the link here!
Hi synaesthesia, can you send me the link to the diy? my engine bay is like yours.

It's a guide on the other uk based accord owners club.
