Timing Chain need mechanic

i just got my timing chain changed for 2.4 petrol, only got car back this morning, timing chain was £90, tensioners £60 and the guides were £60 + vat. I ordered then from donnelys honda group

Philip from Donnelly Honda in Dungannon always gives me a discount, maybe ask him for a quote first

As a guide, over here you'd be looking at around £1200 parts and labour at an indy garage. Honda can go over £3k, as they will not normally re-use many of the parts that have to be removed in order to access the chains (e.g. the diesel injectors @ over £400 each and loads of pipework and bolts, etc). It is a fairly lengthy job with potentially a lot of expensive parts to replace.

What mileage is your accord?

U sudnt havto pay that much like thats all i paid for them parts from honda in dungannon, bt i had my own mechanic do the the job, he only charged me £150, n that was for doin other stuff too like gettin her ready for mot like servicing her and changing break discs n pads n other wee bits, though if u have a diesel i heard it does take longer to do bt only n by a couple of hours :/ mayb the diesel parts are more expensive too. When i read forums about how much it would cost i near died :( hopefully u get sorted for alot less than u think :)

I can't be bothered to check the Honda workshop manual, but it's obviously a vastly different job on the K-series. The diesel has two chains... not sure if the K-series has one or two. The diesel injectors have to be removed to allow the cylinder head cover to be removed, which can be a major job on it's own, with an uncertain outcome and a possible bill of over £1600 (worst case) if the injectors have to be replaced with new ones... many garages will not fit secondhand parts!

Definitely more than just a couple of hours extra for the diesel! And the parts are much more expensive than you might expect... using aftermarket (e.g. Febi Bilstein) chains can save a lot of the cost, but other specific items (such as tensioners, tensioner arms and guides, etc) have to come from Honda so are relatively expensive.

That's a big if (!) but obviously there's little risk in re-using parts that pass careful inspection... I only replaced both chains, the timing chain tensioner arm and the oil pump drive tensioner. So I refitted the oil pump drive chain tensioner arm, the timing chain tensioner and all guides.

The Febi chains were only £80 for the pair from eBay.

If you have it open might as well replace the whole lot. Just my opinion

I have the febi chain for timing that came as part of the deal fingers crossed I can get someone to work on it and it doesn't cost me a bomb thanks guys :D

There's a cover on the chain case which allows you to inspect the tensioner and chain. You can't make much ***essment of the chain, but you can actually remove the tensioner for checking and/or replacement. If your Accord is a 2004 or 2005 model then you have the 'ratcheting' tensioners that can wear and fail. Not a terrible job to change just the timing chain, except for having to remove the injectors.

They will keep running quite happily for a long time with a noisy timing chain. It's usually the oil pump drive chain that snaps and wrecks the engine, so it may be a false economy to not have that replaced at the same time?
