Hi all,
I'm a new member and a first-time Honda owner. I recently bought a 2000 Accord 1.8 vtec se exec 5 door hatch with 120k and fsh. It drives beautifully, but has a few faults. I've got a leak on the pwr steering system. I've identified it as coming from what I believe is called the lower return line. It's a solid pipe that runs under the engine, front to back, and connects between the pipe cooler in front of the rad (via flex hose) and another flex hose at rear of engine bay. The pipe is corroded and leaking from beneath the clamp that holds it to the subframe, just in front of the engine and under what I think is the aircon pump. I think it's only the rubber sleeve of the clamp that is holding in the pressure, as it's bulging!
I've got a couple of breaker yards trying to source a spare for me (Honda want £160!). I'd like to know if anyone has had the same thing and how difficult it would be for me to replace the pipe myself when I get one, and anything else I may need to know to do the job. I'm not hugely knowledgeable about cars, but I'm good mechanically. Any advice or info would be much appreciated.
Thanks very much

Hi,

IIRC, a while ago, there was a guy (not sure if it was here) who had a similar problem on accord or civic(can't remember).

If I am not wrong, that guy did an awesome job. He removed the lower beam, removed the rust, painted everything, including the power steering rack. For the hose, he took the old one to workshop specialized and hydraulic hoses, and they made him a custom one. It made of hydraulic hoses instead of steel, but that did the job just fine.

I have been looking for the post of that fix, but couldn't find it.

Maybe it's worth for you to go one of those workshops and explain the situation. Maybe they can make you a custom hose by the fraction of the price of a new one.

had exactly the same problem, took the underskirt off, then front bumper, cut the PS pipe under the car with the Dremel then cut the PS pipe after it exits the PS reservoir where it curves around and along front of Rad - all easy to see with bumper off. Leave cut pipe circuit in place (mine was rotten in two places)

Clamped hydralic hose from motoring shop to cut end of PS pipe that exits reservior, zip tied it loosely to old pipe circuit, fed it under car and clamped other end to cut PS pipe that goes to rack.

Jack up front, both wheels clear, engine off, add PS fluid and bleed by turning wheels lock to lock 20 - 30 times, when no more bubbles, no change in fluid level, top it off, put cap on Res. Lower car replace all bits, take it for a careful test drive, check for leaks over the next week. Mine was all OK, just passed third MOT. Hope it works for you
