Hi All,

I have just noticed my near side side light has gone out. I was thinking of getting some L.E.D. units to replace them and I have a few questions:

1. Should I order Canbus versions
2. Are L.E.D. sidelights road legal (the spec on the one's I'm looking at says no)

Here's the one's I'm thinking of getting:

Have any of you replaced your sidelights with L.E.D.s and if so, which one's did you go for?

Thanks in advance.

Jason

Side lights aren't even a legal requirement, so they could be blown and you'd still pass MOT.

I bought a wee cheep pair from ebay after two going on me within the first 2 months of owning the car and I haven't had any issues with them.

Hi, check out J4JAV site on the traders section or contact him via the forum he will help you

I would recommend the MTEC 501 bulbs rather than LEDs, particularly if you are facelift:

I've been through all sorts of LEDs, but at the end of the day the MTECs look better and brighter, I would only go back to LEDs for the ability to say I have a full LED conversion - but who really cares!
Useful info Trev, I was gonna go for L.E.D but seeing your outcome of LED, I'll go for the 501s. Ta

Trev, just looked at your website, you're doing some good work. Like Shepherds, the Huskies are intelligent and emotionally expressive dogs.

Thanks dude! The founder of Huskies in Need used to own a GSD, she's very good friends with the people who run Vigil Shepherd rescue and BIGGSD, they've fostered a couple of our dogs on emergency before.

You're welcome fella. Nice to see a fellow dog lover on here. Don'tyou find the tourer cavernous for the pooches? It makes life easier when exercising has finished with the auto opening tailgate. :D

OK,

So I've fitted a set of L.E.D's from Horizon LEDs. What a knacker of a job that was. 2 broken clips (as expected) but got them working..

Thoughts?

Looking good mate. I am currently running a full rear led conversion on my car apart from indicator. Definitely recommend Jav

Thanks!

I want to change my number plate lights next. That looks like a faf too!

Did my side lights a few months back although i kept the standard 501 bulb. Wasnt keen on upgrading them to LED. I also broke many of the fender clips.
Bought these equivalent clips and does the job well.
Part:Fender Clips
Part Number: 91503SZ3003 Item 21

Alternative to genuine honda:

A few people on the forum run these and are pretty good. Very bright too.

I was intending to replace all the bulbs (apart from the headlights) with LEDs but I changed my mind.

I went through several sets of LED sidelight bulbs, and found that all of them either looked rubbish, or looked okay but didn't last very long. In the end I bought MTEC pure white bulbs and stuck with them.

I'm also on my second set of LED sidelight bulbs, which will soon be replaced with standard bulbs again because some of the LED elements are now flickering.

Thanks for the tips guys!

I need to change my headlight bulbs now as they look decidedly yellow by comparison.

Not sure where you heard this from but a side light is an MOT failure, in the MOT computer they are listed as 'position lamps' and must be working. IF a car is presented without any lights fitted then they are not required. This would not apply to any mass produced car.

CAN BUS LED's are only required if your car has a blown bulb warning indicator. LED's have very low resistance, this leads the cars computer thinks the bulb has blown due to the resistance being lower than expected. A CAN BUS LED includes a resistor within the LED unit which increases the resistance to the control unit stopping the bulb warning indicator from illuminating.

As for the legality of the LED side lights, this is down to the mot testers opinion / interpretation of the MOT manual. They are commonly failed for not emitting a white light. They do emit a blueish tint, However I would query it as it is only the same colour as many xenon lights which have the same colour requirements for MOT. Most testers are used to seeing regular bulb side lights which in comparison could be described as yellow.

I know what you mean, I had a full LED conversion on my last 2.0 sport CL7.
The interior lights were fine and looked great at 6000K, but I went through 2 sets of side lights because they started flickering and eventually went out all together after only a couple of months.
The rear tail/brake lights stopped working too.
Dont know if it was because they were cheap or some other issue

Mine started flickering also so I just went for the mtec bulbs which give out a nice white light, you could also check horizon led's on this forum, his have a 1 year warranty with them

I have got Osram leds in mine paid about £12 for the pair but well worth it have had them for several months now with no issues whatsoever. I bought them after getting fed up with buying cheap ones and replacing them every month!

Mine started flickering today. Right need to gift a set of horizon I think.

Hi. I bought side leds on horizon site. After two months it start to flickering but it was enough to take it out and put it back again... so i've checked and it turns out that mine was doing that just because it is to heavy and bulb was losing connection in plug. Check if that is not a problem. Mine is much longer then normal bulb as it has 13leds in it and thats why after few days flickering was coming back. Try to fold pins a lil bit. It helped me

I've been running LED side lights from Horizon for over a year with no problem. I had some different LEDs in before, which would go out from time to time, due to fitment as mentioned above. Try slightly bending the thing metal contact strips outward and refitting the bulb.

well ive messed up, wiggled the bulb and its blown a fuse as both side lights are not working and i did smell a burning smell as it went out. I cant even locate the side light fuse, checked al relevant fuses under engine bay.

I did do teh stupid thing of trying to change the bulb whilst the light was on, hence i think its messed something up, i need to locate the side light fuse

I did try all that with the contacts, I thought I sorted it but it started again, then on the other side, they wern't very big or heavy leds.
To to honest, I have seen more modern cars a year or so old like range rovers with a factory fit with an led out on one side on the main headlights.
And even new led street lights not long instald have blown bulbs very quickly sometimes.
Are leds just a bugger to make work?
