As i stated in my previous thread i've recently bought a 1.8 sport accord and i have a few questions

can the vtec engine cope in 5th gear at 30mph? i often use this gear speed combo and i don't feel the engine is struggling

what can i do about the centre caps? do you think Honda still sell and source them? i've tried ebay and had no luck

here's a picture -

i've got 450miles out of my last tank and that was driving quite carefully - has anyone bettered that?

gear knob - I'm not too keen on the sport gear sliver knob. When my hands are sweaty or wet it's annoying trying to use it to change gear. Any good suggestions about a replacement? i wanna keep it stock honda looking. no fancy chav looking crap :D

cambelt is due in August OR 144,000 miles (the car is currently 111,500)
Is it worth risking it and leaving the cambelt until 140,000 or get it done in august (5 years since last change)

Get the timing belt done as soon as possible. Don't risk it.

With the centre caps, could you refurb them yourself? Give them a sanding and some primer and get the right colour silver (if anyone knows what shade of silver it is let me know) then lacquer it. Shouldn't take too long.

I've changed my gear knob, but kept it as close to standard as I could. It was a few years ago so don't have the link but will search for it.

Welcome, firstly I cant really say for sure but my Accord runs fine in 5th at 30MPH. RPM in that gear is around 1500 IIRC, maybe slightly less.

For your caps, i've no idea but i'd strongly avoid Honda directly. They will probably ask something daft like £100+ for one. They can be had on eBay, I actually got a set ages ago. Infact, if you only need one I have a spare if you're interested.

MPG wise, i'm lucky if I average 30 i'n mine so you done well, or drive like an undertaker! I'm seriously looking into an ATR someday since they can do about the same despite the engine size difference. As 1.8's go it's pretty inefficient even for a car from 2001 IMHO.

As for gearknobs, not sure, the one on my standard trim car is pretty ordinary looking. Might be worth ringing around car breakers seeing if they have a more boring trim accord you could nab one off.

As others have been saying though, get that cambelt sorted above everything else!

I had two 6th gen Accords now. Both 2 litre SE's.

The 1st one (2000 W) was very good on fuel. On trips to Scotland using the cruise control set at about 75, I got 40 mpg (well actually 39.5) using brim to brim. Around town it used to give about 33/34.

The one I have now is not as good. On a similar trip to Scotland I only got 38, same conditions. Around town about 30.

Certainly if you go over 4000 rpm and the VTEC comes in, the mpg gets a lot worse. I have changed airfilter etc but I am surprised why it is not as good. I wonder if its the valve clearances. I checked them last year and they seemed ok - however I have noticed it is slightly noisier when cold than the first one. Does anyone know if the valve clearances make much difference on these engines?

I think the 1.8 will be slightly thirstier. Probably has slightly less bottom end torque than the 2.0 needing a sportier driving style.

Those are good mpg figures for a 15 year old car with that mileage on it. Check also the brakes are all releasing properly, no binding.

For the centre caps, once resprayed, you can get Honda self adhesive centre cap badges off Ebay.

Hope iv posted this in the right thread iv got a 1.8 sohc 1.8 vtec accord triptronic it handles like a bag of crap any ideas on how to make it handle better thanks

Depends on what you mean by bags of ****, these cars handle fantastically from factory, without knowing the condition of your car, your suspension could be badly worn, if they are in good condition lowering the car usually makes handling a bit tighter and less roll, you can also fit a stiffer ARB at the rear from the ATR for less understeer.

Feels like a lot of body roll just don't like handling corners past 45 mph not getting a Knocks or bangs from suspension possibly some over steer as well thanks

ARB is not specific to Honda, it means "Anti Roll Bar" which is not the same as "Roll Bar".

AFAIK all cars have at least one ARB, usually two (one on each "axle")

Cheers mate yea iv replaced one of those all the others seem to be fine mate looks like I'll be pricing up some lowering springs lol thanks

It's gonna roll, especially at 45mph, they sit high on standard spec because the car has to be comfortable and practical. if you want less roll, lower it, otherwise the car handles superb, I have gone through semi-closed roundabout bends at 50 and the car glides through very well, its a lot of fun to drive.

I never found the body roll that bad on mine, certainly less noticeable than on the Audi's I have driven! The ride was slightly firmer in the Accord though and I felt bumps where I didn't in the Audi.

My Golf has none, they weren't fitted as standard to non GTi mk2 Golfs. The body roll is terrible

I must admit you do feel bumps in mine I'm certainly going to investigate my suspension further thanks guys

You will feel some bumps, but the suspension will absorb it, the Accord has the perfect setup IMO, it is neither too hard where the ride is fidgety and uncomfortable nor is it too soft where it wafts and wallows around too much like a boat, I like a firm but comfortable ride, the Accord is spot in that area thanks to the double wishbone suspensions, would love to lower it to make it handle even better with less roll, but that will sacrifice practicality which I dont want.

I agree there mate instead of lowering it I'm thinking maybe either 16 or 17 inch alloys mate as at the current suspension is decent mate tbh I appreciate all you guys input thanks

I think the handling is more than adequate. The two I have owned have both been fine, even with economy tires fitted, on standard rims.

My present one rattled a bit and was a bit 'happy' on the rear end, when I first got it. Nothing appeared amiss when inspected, but I just replaced the anti roll bar bushes and the drop links. Made a significant difference and the parts were cheap off ebay.

I suppose it depends on what you want. These cars are not designed to be rallied. They are a good honest, reliable motor cars.

Personally think the 6th gens handling is more than adequate. First think to check is drop links.

Center caps from a breakers or similar, avoid the dealers.

400+ miles from a tank is what I got on both my 2.0 6th and my ATR...that's under usual driving conditions.
