Honda Accord 2.2 EX
Hi,

I am picking my shiny new(ish) Accord up tomorrow morning (and giving up my beloved Volvo). Its a 12 plate so quite modern. Well kitted out - but as we know - its never quite right. I did a lot to the Volvo, and will obviously do something to the Honda.

My List includes:
ICE - keep the existing HU but do what is necessary to the speakers / amps / sub-woofer to get better sound
HIDs
The auto folding wing mirrors sound like a good idea
Driver Cams, front and back
Road Angel - either re-use my existing, or upgrade to a GEM
DPF & EGR Removal (note I have manufacturers warranty - so won't be doing these to start with)
Tuning.via ECU or similar

Tuning:
On the subject of the later there are lots of ways of tuning a car - but two major ones I can think of
1. Add a box that works in conjunction with the ECU - so no change to the ECU
2. Remap / Modify the existing ECU - but needs reflashing to get back to normal - I suspect a for better and cleaner mechanism

I have seen or heard of devices that can be used, by the consumer, rather than a dedicated tuner that retunes the ECU by plugging into the OBD port and doing summat to the ECU. This can then be flashed back to stock by the same method. OR a dedicated tuner, and I guess we can all think of one, could do it - but to go back to stock means going back to the tuner to reflash the ECU. OR there is the in-line box that (as far as I can tell) just causes the car tyo add more fuel - and the later doesn't appeal. Personally I like to idea of a plug in box that I can use to set the car to a map and have the ability to map back to stock

Also, if we ***ume a non-lunatic remap then what are the implications on turbo life etc of a sensible tune. I note that the DTEC comes in 150 and 180PS versions. Is the 180 just a tuned 150?

DPF & EGR Removal:
What are the implications of doing these on:
1. Turbo
2. Emissions
3. Exhaust / Cat systems
4. MOT test
5. Anything else I haven't thought of

Regards

Sean

Hi Sean,

Welcome and congrats on the purchase. Please avoid any sort of tuning box, these are simply piggy back solutions and alter only one or two variables.

A correctly calibrated remap will alter all variables including fuel, boost, emissions and torque limiters. There simply is no comparison.

It isn't possible to flash this car via obd, it needs the ecu out to achieve a correct and safe flash. It also isn't possible to deactivate the egr on the later facelift cars like yours at the moment.

The 180 type s has different hardware including a larger turbo core, cooling and a stronger clutch. It makes bigger gains than the stock 148bhp car although 200bhp is possible with a nice stage 2 and dpf removed.

Although it's under warranty it is possible to tune without making it obvious. Drop me a line if you're interested.

So how visible is a remap to Honda as they will be doing the servicing?

It turns out (cough - I hadn't spotted this) that I have the premium sound. Initial tests indicate no work required - which is good

Sean

It's not visible under normal servicing routines if done correctly. My F10 BMW used to go into BMW 3 times a year and they never spotted it, and they run a far more complex diagnostic system than Honda.

Really? That sounds hopeful - I may take you up on your offer of a chat sometime in the new year

On another subject HID's

Any idea on where I should get HID's from?
Autobulbsdirect @ £95.00 a pair
hids4u @ £95.00 a pair
[Are these actually the same company as they appear to be in the same building and the kits are named identically?]
hids-direct @ £51.95 a pair
Hidconversion @ £79.99 a pair
Xenonshop @ Unknown - they seem to do 55W only. I am only looking at 35W
Xenonbulbs @ £59.95
Headlightretrofits @ £240 I think
Superhids @ 99.00
Horizonleds @ 79.95

There may be others - but that seems a fair selection
:)

And another subject - Dash Cams
The unit here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XHD-1296P-Mini-0805-Dash-Cam-Car-Camera-DVR-Ambarella-A7-WDR-GPS-Track-UK-Stock-/321868092402?hash=item4af0d553f2:g:ycwAAOSwWnFV-hhP or similar
seems to tick the right boxes hidden up as near behind the rear view mirror as possible.
I can get this hardwired in easily enough - some of the offers come with hard wire kits

I have checked the manual and don't see any reason not to put the unit behind the rear view mirror

I have an older unused similar style unit I can put in the rear.

Also any idea how much power these use whilst the car is turned off. I hate flat batteries but would like the bonus of being able to leave them running (Interesting website here: https://dashcamtalk.com/battery-discharge-prevention/)

Regards

Yes there is a reversing camera. Not what I am talking about.

I want a front and back record of either someone plowing into the back of me - or me plowing into the back of someone else - or all the other things that can happen

Plus, if they can stay on whilst the car is tuned off without buggering the battery - that would also be good

I bet you are a hard man to buy christmas presents for. But I will lay odds you do not have the gizmo that calls the emergency services if the car stops!! See vauxhall's latest piece of rubbish.

Back to the subject of dashcams and where they go. There is a sensor on the back of the Rear View mirror , left hand side (when sat in the car)

What's it for? It seems to be pointing in the wrong direction for the auto dim function and the headlight sensor was I thought on the dashboard (maybe) or I have the wrong end of the stick. Basically it implies that the camera will have to be mounted on the right hand side of the mirror mount - I think

Sean

Get HIDs of eBay got mine last week as had one go out think they was £19 work great had them in most of my cars of eBay as for cam I got 4 of eBay for Christmas presents for family no more than £30 one in my car was more think my other half paid like £70 and they are pretty much the same as the cheaper ones tbf

Well I have bought the HID's - just need to book time to take the front off the car to fit them
DashCAM bought and fitted - the Thinkware F750. HD front and rear
I also updated the SatNav - which has been well worth it as its completely changed the way the ICE handles iPod's - I can now search through tracks by name genre etc - which I couldn't before
Phone now also hardwired with a QI charger playing through a set of BT speakers (for camera warnings). Not quite loud enough - but its close

Nearly finished. I shall give it a year and then look at a remap after the Honda warranty has run out

Not - but I did fit a small LiPo battery to power the DashCam - so there is no danger of the car battery going flat if I leave it for a week
