Driving in on a cold crisp morning, I've noticed my 2000 1.8 drives and pulls a lot smoother at startup compared to a warmer morning, when I often experience some hesitancy and kangarooing. Overall, she's running much better than when first acquired, with regular blasts and daily motorway runs of 60+ miles. I've cleaned out the EGR plate, which has definitely helped, she's been serviced and had a new fuel filter last year. Mpg is as expected. Just passed her MOT, so emissions/lambda probe presumably behaving. Anyone any pointers?

Just as most humans prefer beer when it's cold, most I.C. engines also prefer cold air, it's more dense, it makes a difference.

Hi Freddo
Yes, agreed, you get more oxygen and hence bang for your buck when the air's cold. I was wondering if there's any 'automatic choke-like' probe or sensor affected by the ambient temperature and now maybe out of tolerance causing, for example, an inlet valve not to open 'correctly' and leading to an incorrect fuel/air ratio. After a mile or so she's fine, warm or cold, but I can't believe 'it's supposed to do that'! Shall I just put it down to aging components (like my back...and knees...eyes, etc etc!)

I can't remember whether your car uses MAP or MAF, but the latter is more accurate (note that IAT is also measured)
