Hi - following a light shunt at a roundabout last week the tailgate sensor seems to think that the tailgate is open even when its not and consequently the remote central locking isn't working to lock (works fine to unlock). I can operate the central locking using the key in the drivers lock but not using the remote.
So it looks just like whatever the sensor is that detects the tailgate being closed may have been dislodged or something. Happy to take it to the local garage but just thought I'd try and fix it myself if something simple. On the doors I see there are push switches built into the frame but I can't see anything similar on the tailgate. Anyone know how it detects the tailgate is still open ?

Unfortunately the other driver stopped but as there didn't appear to be any damage - not even a mark on the exterior, I didn't ask for their details. It wasn't until I'd reached my destination that I discovered the problem.

TIA

I only know the 7th gen tailgate system, and I think the 8th gen has quite a few differences.

On the 7th gen, something like that could be related to some sensors on the side of the tailgate, have a look at those. Also check to see if the tailgate is properly aligned when shut.

The other thing that could cause something like this on the 7th gen is an issue with the "closer motor", which is built into the handle section, and has multiple latches, but usually when that goes wrong, the tailgate will not shut or will not open.

I believe the 'boot closed' switch is part of the catch mechanism, and if faulty / damaged may have to replaced as a whole item -depending upon how good you are at fixing stuff that is ;) The good news is that it doesn't seem (unusually for Honda) to be very expensive:

It's not something I've really looked at, but to access it properly I reckon the whole boot lid interior trim has to come off (about a million clips). You might be able to see something behind the flap that allows manual release of the boot though...

Let us know how you get on...

Do the lights stay on in the boot? I can't see a separate switch for those, so I'd imagine if they think it's closed so will the central locking.

Thanks for the replies - I'll take a closer look at the catch mechanism and see if I can work out what's wrong. It looks pretty fiddly to remove because the access panel is quite small I my hands are too big. Looks like I'll be employing my wife to help out.

OK on closer examination it looks like the lock mechanism is working but it slightly out of alignment. Using a screwdriver I can move the lock catch into two closed positions. In the second position it thinks it's closed and the light no longer displays on the dash. So although it closes OK with a firm push and locks OK it must not be quite perfectly shut as far at the sensor is concerned. Going to take it into my local garage and see what they can do.
