Hi,
Something that has developed in the car of late, is a noise which appears to be from the front wheels.
It is hard to describe, however the best i can compare to is driving over cats eyes on the middle of the road, only a lighter more frequent thud.

Pressing on the brakes greatly worsens the problem. It will occur at any speed, fast or slow.

The strange thing is, that it doesnt occur all the time, some days its perfect, very smooth driving. There is no vibration up into the steering wheel.

Trying to eliminate potential causes:

1. Some light wear on the inside edges of the front tyres - I think if it was an alignment issue/tyre issue the problem would be permantly present, either back or front.

2. I would have thought brakes, i checked front wheels, and the only thing i see is an uneven wear, as in not purely flat on the faces, where the pads contact, the calipers semm ok, not siezed i havent checked the back brakes.
Thinking about this since though, when there is no vibration through the steering wheell, maybe it points to the back ones. That is if its brakes that are at fault.

3. Wheel bearings, i have jacked up the car at all wheel, and dont find any roughness/looseness in rotating the wheels.

Is there anything else to look at, or have you experienced this issue?

Thanks

How strange. I have exactly the same problem. At slow speeds it sounds like a dull thud and at 60 mph a thud with a slight whistle. Above 60 I cannot hear it.

It started in June when I was towing my caravan through France, and was particularly noticeable on the very smooth toll motorways. As you have found, it seemed to come and go, appearing or disappearing after a short stop, and although I was convinced it was the front nearside wheel, my wife thought it was coming from the back. I drove 2500 miles and, while irritating, it didn't get any worse. On my return I took it to my Honda dealer as the car is still in warranty. A mechanic came for a test drive with me and also thought it was from the front. They swapped the wheels front to back but the noise persisted and they decided it must be a front wheel bearing. The wheel bearing was changed under warranty and......the noise was still there. The car was booked in again and a different mechanic came with me. I drove the car on different road surfaces and he thought that the noise was not mechanical, but caused by a tyre (hard spot?). I have driven another 1000 miles since then and it still comes and goes, but now I just ignore it.

The tyres are the original Yokohamas and have now done 22000 miles with plenty of wear left on them, so I will not find out for certain if it is a tyre until I have to change them. I might add that my local dealer, Baden Powell Honda, Scunthorpe has been excellent, and asked me to keep them informed of developments.

It turns out that its a rear brake caliper sticking that is the cause of this. It wasnt until this morning that i discovered the problem. Im ***uming there is a slightly warped disc too.

My 8th gen accord, rear drivers side caliper seized on me and cost £320ish from Honda. I wasn't happy when I found out. I'm just hoping the crv doesnt suffer this too.

I am going to dismantle my caliper and clean it and replace seals. Im going to give this method a try anyways.

Its only an intermittent sieze, which does release, the piston is easy to push back. I have had another car(non honda) with endless seized calipers, and the pistons used nearly be rusted in the bore, and hard moved

Hi guys.

Had my rear near side calliper replaced about a month ago, previously it had a partially seized and was freed by Honda Lincoln and a new piston, seals installed. So when new calliper was fitted I asked for the old one back, so I removed the dust seal and the piston was really stuck, removed bleed screw and used a drift through the hole to tap the piston out. I then found a lot of corrosion around the piston seal which was not helping!!!

How badly corroded was the piston, and how long did the initial repair last?

I wonder are the pistons chrome coated, or plain steel

Hi Accord1108.

There were no signs of corrosion on the piston anywhere (it was new), initial repair lasted about ten months which is why it went back as I believed it had a years warranty, but only three months when I read the T & C. Could not tell if chrome plated.
