Hi Guys,

first post....

swaying towards a purchase of a Honda Accord for my next car, found one in particular, a 2005 Type S 2.0 petrol auto (75k miles on the clock).

my daily commute is around 25 miles (total) and i'll be covering around 8k miles a year.

how solid is the auto gearbox on these things, auto worth getting/avoiding? anything i should look out for? would a 2.2 diesel be better suited for me?

thanks all!

No issues in general with the petrols, maybe worth replacing the gearbox fluid if it hasn't been done. for your commute, stick with the petrol, what you may lose in mpg you will gain in reliability, diesels are too complex/finicky (****etech).

You need to rack up the miles in the diesel to keep it healthy or you risk blocking the dpf filter. Mr hondas right and I'm sure most on here will agree the petrols are more reliable (not that the diesels are bad there actually very good). Have a look through the 7th gen faults section.

I would go for it Accord petrol engine is reliable and never goes wrong the Automatic gearbox is very reliable. I own myself can't even feel the gear changes.

Diesel does not make sense if you are not doing many miles but if you do go for a diesel look out for timing chain rattle, cracked exhaust manifold and clutch and flywheel all can be costly repairs.

Thanks for the responses,

Petrol it is! Anything i should look out for with regards to the automatic gearbox? would you say its worth sticking to a manual petrol or are the auto's just as reliable?

Both are as reliable. I have a Automatic myself and have had no issues mine is on 120k now. Manual mode in the Auto can be fun.

Yes all reliable but you'll have a slight bit more performance and mpg in a manual just because of the slight power loss/gearing through the auto box. But I would think about your driving style laid back and cruise or enjoy firing through the gears with a bit more control over gear changes etc. (Although if performance is a real concern go for a 2.4 manual all day long)

I have the 2.0L auto petrol, and cover 50miles a day.
Its a great car, been faultless and definitely fun to drive (not as fun to drive as my mk2 Golf though).
But well built, solid does have decent pickup and top speed.
Auto box is great, definitely cant feel it change gears completely smooth and mine has done over 75k.

I have a 2 ltr auto estate. Cruising at 75 it's only reving at 2 1/2. That's comfortable motoring. :)
