Evening all,

I bought some proper Honda auto gearbox oil a while ago, and today asked my local garage to change it for me (I'm lazy).
They weren't keen to do it at all.

They tell me there's a risk of introducing problems to what is currently a problem free gearbox.

Any truth in this? because if not I'll change it myself when I'm feeling energetic.

It does have some truth, have a search on the forum, a user called BlueVTEC who works at a gearbox company made a few good points. If you have no problems with the gearbox then don't change it. You won't even be able to change it all, you will need to do several flushes to get all oil out and replaced because half of it resides in place slike the tourque converter.

I've searched out BlueVTEC posts, and none seem relevant to oil.
The search seems limited somehow (I can only get back to early 2015). If there is an 'advanced' search function I haven't found it yet.

AND, immediately after typing that, I went to see what the little cog wheel next to search box is for. Too late to hunt tonight, more research for tomorrow.

1. The ATF fluid used in the accord autos is actually a lifetime oil, which despite being on the service routine does not need to be changed. However if you really feel the need to change it, bare in mind that at most, you will only remove 2/3rds of the old oil, as the rest will be held in the hubs, converter, valve body etc. Also, the stronger detergent in the new oil will put you at risk of dislodging any sizeable build up which was otherwise out the way. If any build up then gets into the valve body, it will most likely stick a valve. My advice would be to leave well alone, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!".

Believe Honda or this fella, the choice is yours ;)
I have to believe Honda, or this fella AND my local garage that I've used for more than 15years now. They've never flat refused to do something I've asked for before (and I've asked for some weird stuff over the years :D ).
He's not a Honda specialist by any means, but is a garage that I trust.

The Accord was in there for MoT anyway, so I'd asked for gearbox oil and a couple of other minor jobs at the same time.

He and I were both in a rush when I collected the car this morning (with its shiny new MoT ticket) so I wasn't able to chat to him about the gearbox oil thing, but he must have had some bad experience in the past, or heard of some from his own contacts.
