Hello everyone,

I have a 2006 Accord, Petrol - Automatic. 137K mileage. Got it 6 months ago from 1st owner with full service history.

About a week ago, soon after I take the exit on motorway and stop at red lights, I heard Rattling/Grinding noise coming from my car.

Straight away I checked the RPM and it was much lower then normal. About 500 RPM. So both problems started at the same time.

Since that day, Idle RPM is lower than before. But idle is OK in cold start, soon engine reaches normal temperature, idle is low.

I showed to a local garage, he said that noise should be Water Pump.

Do you have any idea how both these problems came at the same time ? If Water Pump is faulty, can it lower the RPM ?

If I turn on head lights RPM slightly increase but not much. Also if I turn steering wheel on idle RPM increases slightly.

The noise is still there, doesn't matter on low or high RPM. Engine temperature gauge shows that temperature is always OK. So no problem with over heating.

If you think I need to change Water Pump, do you recommend genuine or any other aftermarket, and how much is rough price mechanics charge for water pump change.

Thank you.

Sounds like timing chain i would upload a video so we can hear

With most overhead cam engines with nested water pumps it's best to replace the timing chain / belt and the water pump at the same time.

I agree but just wanted to confirm before

If the revs have changed at idle it sounds like the timing maybe out due to chain stretch, get it sorted pronto!

Sorry for the late update guys. There was a reason.

Firstly, thank you for your replies.

Thanks to your replies and also some internet research myself, I have been to the same mechanic previously visited, and asked him to remove the belt temporarily.

He started to car while there is no belt, and there was no grinding noise at all. He increased the rev up and down and there was no noise. Does is definitely eliminate the Chain ?

So, mechanic said it is Water Pump, again. I should ask actually how does he know because there are 4 pulleys turning with this belt.

But unfortunately idle rpm was still very low while the belt is out.

I didn't change anything yet, noise is still there and idle rpm is still very low.

And I still don't understand how these 2 problems appeared at the same time.

Hi,

I've been through these on my 2.0 manual tourer too!

Get the mechanic to check each pulley by spinning it and listening to the noise. Or with the belt back in, place a long screw driver near each pulley, most likely one of the bearings. The AC compressor can be the weakest point, then water pump and alternator etc...

Go through these and you will find the cause.

Low idle could be a number of things, check for split air intake hose, blocked air filter etc.

Yes I will go to him back and ask that. Seems thats the best way.

When he removed the belt, he manually turned the water pump pulley and also looked for if the pulley bearing is not as it should be. It was looking OK actually.

I saw on you tube about this long screwdriver as well. Where to touch the tip of screwdriver? And top pulley for Power Steering is easy to reach but especially water pump is in deep down. But anyway, where to touch the tip of screwdriver ?

Sorry let me fix a stethoscope

You could get DVR to record mechanics work lol

Have you looked on good garage and motor ombudsmen?

Have you checked out good garage scheme or motor ombudsmen for mechanics that are qualified?

Both have registered garages it's a good place to start and find a proper mechanic

Just for your info I don't believe water pump will cause low idle that is another most likely to be sensor or valve problem

Thank you for the info. I didn't know. I will go through with them and make some contacts with the mechanics.

Good plan

UPDATE :
  • Water pump has been changed and there is no more grinding noise. I didn't buy original one, Honda garage said £120, I bought Blue Print.
  • Engine idle low RPM is still there, 500RPM. Local garage cleaned the throttle body, with brand new original gasket back to the engine. Still low RPM on idle. But engine REV is different then before on bad way, even on moving. Speed at 30mph , engine rev goes right down to 500RPM and then comes back to previous RPM like 1200 or 1300 whatever. This happens when I don't touch to accelerator pedal.
  • Occasionally again on low speed engine REV goes up strongly and feel like another car hit from behind. I hope it won't brake the automatic transmission.
  • Another thing with engine REV, when I slow down to stop, on nearly dead slow speed, engine revs up itself, and I need to press brake more.
  • Engine performance is not good, both before the throttle body cleaning and after.
  • And last thing, obviously more annoying then before. :(
What do you advice people ? Do I need to go to Honda for a diagnostic ? I phoned them and they quoted £90 for a diagnostic. Somehow I don't trust them. I think any problem, regardless if it is a minor or major, they make it big issue, more complex then Brexit :) . Well, this is my observation on them. Maybe I am wrong.

Maybe I can record some videos while driving. But don't know if it makes a difference for you.
