Hi Guys

Just in middle of de-coking manifold and will need some more antifreeze so will take toe opportunity of renewing it all.

Honda say use only their antifreeze but surely there must be equivalent on the market these days for a Mk 7 i.CTDI coolant system.

The antifreeze that came out of the car was an emerald green colour but my local car parts store says that red was recommended for the vehicle and he matched it to the reg No.

The girl on the help desk at Euro Car Parts didn't know.

Both aftermarket Red or Blue should be OK. Blue will be be cheaper though.

Flush out the green stuff or do a radiator flush with an additive and water. Green is not the correct standard (but won't do anything rash like blow your engine if you run it for a while).

Colour of fluid in the engine in my car is a nice green colour, original Honda stuff.

OK, but if you don't know what is actually in your system and it's green, it is more likely an incorrect cheap aftermarket coolant than if you find blue or red.

Hi guys

Interesting you should say that Green is not the correct standard Richard B. My local Honda garage who I avoid like the plague put green in it when they gave the car back to me after an exhaust manifold change.

I will have to put plain water in it when I have finished the decoke to enable me to get to the shop for the antifreeze so that should give it a good flush out.

As regards the decoke Jon_G I spent most of yesterday cleaning the manifold out once I got it off. It was badly fouled up with sticky gunge on every other port, not all eight of them. I bought five ltrs of brake cleaning fluid to soak it in to help. From the state of the manifold and the inlets on the block I am surprised it kept going but I am still getting good mpg out of it.

I also have oily residue in the pipe down to the intercooler and the pipe coming out of the rear of the air filter box is this normal and if not what is causing it. I thought I was going to find dry carbon deposits in the manifold. Probably would have been easier to clean.

Cheers.

There always does seem to be oil there, I've ***umed that some of the EGR hanging around in the inlet tract condenses out and contaminates the pipework.

That's reassuring Jon_G

I was beginning to think I had a major problem on my hands.

So just to recap, the red is OK provided it has selacate in it (according to the Wikipedia page about coolants where it states that Honda and Toyota suggest using it.

I wonder why my local excuse for a Honda dealer put the green stuff in.

Thanks

My antifreeze is purple? Is that why I got a puncture last winter?

yep that's the OEM Honda stuff, same as in mine

I agree Ned

There is always one monkey in the crowd!!!

hi guys, silly question but i am doing a few last minutes checks before a long journey.
I'm not sure when the coolant was last changed but it is purple and seems to be topped up fine.
Is there anything else i should check with this before I leave (bearing in mind I will be changing the coolant at some point in the coming months)
Engine oil, tire check and pressure, screen wash and a nice "Black Ice" air freshener have all been done lol.
If needed can i use the Halfords recommended stuff to top it up, does it have to be the same colour despite the colour not being a guild line?

cheers

(Forgot to add its a 2.0Ltr petrol if that makes any difference)

If you're on a long trip and topping-up becomes an ongoing issue, then you may as well top up with plain tap water until the source of the leak has been found and repaired.

Topping up recommendations are a minefield. None of us knows what might already be in there.
