Electronic Service Manual

Or mount the ISO with daemontools or something similar. You can also extract the iso and just have it as a normal folder and file.

Don't bother buying it, as all it is the same ISO burnt on a CD by someone and charging £10 for it.

Did you get the download working (link at the end of the thread given in your "water leaks" thread) ?

Here is the direct link https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B3_VzfMyWzE9ZFVHSUN4MEtmVkk

It's an iso, depending on your windows version you might have to unblock it first (right-click on the file, select properties, then click on unblock).

Then either burn it do a CD or use MagicISO http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-extractiso.htm
Well I've downloaded the file via the link you provided, unblocked it and tried to open it with MagicISO but I'm buggered if I can get it to open up the manual.

Create a folder for the ESM e.g. "esm6gen"

When you've installed MagicISO, click on File, "Open ..." and a small "explorer" window will open.
Find the iso file and Open it.

You will then see all the contents of the iso listed in a window in MagicISO.
Right-click anywhere on that list of files in the window, then click on "Extract ..." and a small "explorer" window will open.
Find the folder "esm6gen", make sure that "All files" is selected, then click on OK

You will then see that all the contents of the iso are now in the folder "esm6gen".

Note that originally I did not do this ..... I burned the iso to a CD (using Nero StartSmart).

The CD, and the folder "esm6gen" , both contain a file Setup.exe (which I ran from the CD).

BUT .....I have now run Setup.exe from the folder "esm6gen", and then when I click on the "Honda ESM Accord 1998" icon, I get the message "Please insert the Honda ESM CD into drive E:\", which then runs when I insert the CD .

You may be ok if you have not run Setup.exe from a CD, but if you get the same message as I do, you will either have to burn the iso to a CD, or do as Exec suggests and mount the iso as a virtual drive.

OK, I've done everything up to this point and all has worked OK. What do I need to do now to finally access the ESM and use it?

This ISO business is a pain isn't it? The ESM for my 3G Accord is all in PDF files and is a piece of cake. Is the fact I'm using Windows 10 part of the problem?

yep , for a simple "wrapper" iso is a bit of a pain, and doesn't compress, though it is quicker and less likely to be corrupted than Zip

But up until this point, the Windows version is not relevant.

However, I ran the Setup.exe on Windows XP, all that does is put a file ESMview.exe and a shortcut to it "Honda ESM Accord 1998"

I just put the CD in a Windows 8.1 laptop and ran the Setup.exe on that and there is an icon (or "app") called "Honda ESM Accord 1998" but it doesn't run. Reason = no ESMview.exe anywhere on the laptop

i'll see if it runs by copying ESMview.exe from the XP laptop to the 8.1 laptop.

Thanks for all your help with this. :)

Bad news, ESMview.exe comes up with an error message on my Windows 8.1 , so there is no way for the CD to run.

I'm not 100% sure whether it will run in Windows 8.1 , in some ways it doesn't surprise me because if you look at the files they're dated 1998/1999/2000 and so Setup.exe is trying to put stuff in the registry that just won't work (because the file systems are organised differently). It could be possible to get it running in Windows 8.1 but I haven't gone that far.

Note also that the 7th gen and 8th gen ESMs run in Internet explorer (using javascript) so those do run on XP right the way through (although they run better in IE 8 or 9) , but this 6th gen ESM seems to be an OLE type of program (related to the error message I got).

If anyone had got it working on Windows 8 or higher, I'd be interested to know if they also experienced any issues, and if they did, how they got round it.

I'll have to see if I still have my old WinXP laptop sitting in a cupboard somewhere.

The easiest way would be to burn the iso to a CD (or a DVD) on the Windows 10 laptop, put the CD into the XP laptop, run setup.exe from the CD, and then keep the CD in the drive. That you won't even need to connect the XP laptop to the internet ;)

Cool. Thanks for the info. :)

I have this working on windows 7 and i would imagine this should work for all windows operating systems.

1. mount the .ISO. I recommend this program as its portable and easy to use: http://wincdemu.sysprogs.org/portable/
2. now open the .ISO and right click the "setup.exe" click on the compatibility tab. then click on "run this program in compatibility mode for"
from the list choice "Windows 98" then click apply.
3. run the setup
4. Once the setup has completed click on "start" and then "All programs" then look for a folder called "Honda ESM"
5. Run the desired program Honda ESM Accord 1998 or special tools.

I hope this guide is useful. :)

As a result of the above, I've managed to get it working from the CD in Windows 8.1

If you want to run it from a CD you basically have to do same as above.

Right-click on Setup.exe , click on Properties, click on the Compatibility tab, click on "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and then select "Wiindows 98 / Windows Me" , also click on "Run this program as an administrator", then click on OK

Then when you run Setup.exe it places the icons in the "Apps" window (as before in #7) but now ESMview.exe has been added into a directory in "Program Files (x86)" , and I presume that the Registry also now has the correct entries.

So the secret is in "compatibility mode" on later Windows versions, and in my case I have it on one CD which runs in either of my laptops B)

Just remember to remount the .ISO after reboot or after you close the .ISO mounting software. Otherwise you will get an error and the program will not open correctly.

Even though you install the program on your system it still takes the necessary files it needs to run from the .ISO

Or if you have it on disc like Brian. Make sure this disk in is the drive before running the software :)

I would think that, instead of mounting the ISO or using a CD, it would also work by copying the contents to the root of the C-drive, and then run Setup.exe. I suspect that "ESMview.exe" always defaults to the files being in the root of a drive.
