Hi There

I was looking to change the Diesel filter on my 2009 Accord following this guide:
http://typeaccord.co.uk/forum/topic/9049-diy-8th-gen-idtec-diesel-fuel-filter-change/

All went well until I went to remove the bolt holding the hose to the cap. It has been rounded, I am able to grip it with plyers but it is in very tight and there is not much working room (even with the cross member and fuse box out). I am not sure what to try next, I can't heat it as the housing is plastic and full of fuel and there’s no room to get power tools in?

I did think about cutting the cap round the bolt as it is plastic but I would need a replacement cap?

I think it's the same as the 7th gen, and IIRC there's been a couple of threads with the same problem on the 7th gen, and IIRC they had to cut the cap ....but I could be wrong (my car is the 2.4 petrol)

I'd cut that bolt head off, then unscrew the remaining stud from the cap once it's off the car. Only need to replace the bolt then.

Wouldn't be overly worried about igniting diesel. You'd need more heat than you can generate to do that.

Have you tried a ring spanner? It would make use of all the remaining head not just two opposing damaged flats. If you can get pliers in, might you be able to use mole grips? A blow lamp probably wouldn't be wise, but might the heat from half a kettle full of carefully poured water help? And / or iced water for that matter. My bolt screws into a brass insert, which is open on the end -can you get some penetrating oil in from the open end?

Failing that you might have to chip away at the plastic to expose the bolt. Obviously you'd need a replacement cap if you took this approach though. And a new bolt too! I think you might need a 16904-RL0-G01 (check before ordering though) which some foreign sites have for a few quid, but Lings want £75! Shop around...

From memory there was some issue about a revised design (identified by a white dot?) for the plastic bit, but I can't find any mention of it at the minute. Perhaps it was because the bolt was prone to seizing in place?

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for all the replies guys. The bolt is completely rounded on all sides and there is no room for mole grips as the pipe is too close, I had a look around for a replacement cap with that part number but the cheapest I could find was £75. I might try cutting the bolt head off with a Dremel if I can get it in there.

After talking to a friend who restores old Land Rovers (he knows a lot about stuck and rounded bolts  ) I 've order one of these bolt extractor sets:

I'll let you know how I get on when it gets here......

These are very good and brought a set when I cleaned my ERG valve on my old 7th gen diesel.
They have a reverse thread and cut and grip into the bolt.

You can buy sockets that are made to remove rounded off bolts . I have an impact set that copes with 90% rounded .

Its out!

I sprayed it with Penetrating oil all week, then used the bolt extractor set when it arrived yesterday. Very impressed with the bolt extractor!
The filter looked like it needed changing, very black.

and the cap had a white dot on so guess its the new type?

Old thread I know, but does anyone know the bolt size or where to get one? Mine is beginning to round so would rather replace it now while it’s not too late. Cheers
