My alternator is on it's way out (it's making a horrendous noise), it's the second time I'll have to replace it now. It's a 2004 diesel, I've changed the belt setup for the newer shorter version but I think the second hand alternator I fitted (also from a 2004 car) hand lasting damage caused by the longer belt setup. So, this time round I'd like to go for an alternator from a later model so it's always been run with the shorter belt and should hopefully last longer, but are facelift and pre-facelift alternators all the same?

Why not confirm it for yourself by using the LingsHondaParts website to see if the different models have the same alternator part numbers?

Just to definitely confirm, a facelift and pre-facelift are the same having changed mine 2004 one for a 2006 one last week and have had no issues with it.

Worth buying a rebuild kit and diying it.
They are fairly reasonable I'd guess not more than 45 for the diode pack bearings and brushbox.

I paid £140 for my refurbished unit, parts and labour with 1 years guarantee

On the old Lucas ACR units you could tell the output by looking at the stator , its called a stator because its stationary , and the part that revolves is a rotor , on a dynamo the armature which rotates is the stator on an alternator , and the field coils that were stationary in a dynamo , is the rotor on an alternator , the ACR units were easy , you could tell the output by the stator width , and these went from 15 to 18 ACRS , I would say no matter what you fit these alternators are high output compared to what they were when I was a lad , oops I started on dynamos , do you have an auto electrical place near you ? if you have ask them to remove the alternator or do it yourself , ask them if its worth fitting a pair of bearings , and brushes if they are low , it may even need a slip ring , that's what the brushes run on .

To me that sounds too much like hard work compared to one click of the buy it now button on eBay and having a second hand OEM one delivered to your door for the same money. But obviously it's each to their own.

Actually rebuilding an alternator is one of the easier jobs I have done, you can do it all standing up in your shed with a vice.
Sticking a secondhand one on is fine, but there would always be a nagging doubt, I don't have that with a rebuilt one.
The Accord is easy access and thats a big plus, The last one I rebuilt was an Avensis 2.0TD and the alternator was right at the back of the engine bay above the driveshaft and a pig to remove.
I quite enjoyed stripping rebuilding it, its a bit like ***embling a model kit if you are into that kid of thing.
I know not everyone likes that kind of thing but I do get a sense of satisfaction doing that kind of work on bikes and cars.
One of my to-do list things for this winter was to get an old alternator and starter and rebuild them to have them on hand if the one on the car gave trouble.
