Hi, hope all is well.

I want to get a bit of info if possible please on a knocking sound i'm getting from inside the steering rack. My mechanic has just been round and he said that the noise is coming from inside the rack, possibly the pinion isnt sitting properly or the bushes have gone inside the housing of the rack. I had a re-conditioned rack fitted last year for the same knocking sound and the sound has unfortunately returned. The mechanic also checked the other parts of the suspension and everything is fine, including the end joints of the rack (inner tie rods?)

I'm thinking that maybe this is a common problem on the accords as my steering is sluggish and drifts to the left (could be that the tracking wasnt done well, i always get the tracking done on Hunter machines).

Luckily, my rack came with a 2 year warranty and was bought from Western Power Steering Ltd in Bristol.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers
Serg.

My steering rack makes a knocking sound when the steering wheel is waggled with the engine off. There's a little bit of play in there but it doesn't seem to cause any handling problems, or get an MOT advisory.

Same as mine Jon. Clunky when the car's off. Smooth and silent when it's running.

Totally normal for the steering racks to make noise when the steering wheel is rocked back and fouth and the engine isn't running. If you do the same thing with the engine running you should hardly hear anything ,well nothing compared to with the engine off.

When i'm driving and i turn the wheel it knocks, it also knocks as the wheel is turning back into central position, it knocks when the car pulls away. I will let the mechanic know that the racks are adjustable, need to find the topic on the forums. cheers for the replys, but i've had this problem for a number of years now.
