I am currently waiting for recovery to arrive so thought I'd ask if anyone has an idea what could be wrong.

I was driving on the M25 and thought I saw a light flick on, it did it again and was the airbag light. I carried on and then it stayed on, shortly followed by the 3 yellow lights. The radio was also playing up along with the clock display flashing on and off.

I got off the motorway, turned the car off and now it won't start at all. Hopefully an error code has been stored but could this point to anything specific or could it be anything?

It's the 2.4 petrol auto as well.

Yeah it was definitely weird electrical behaviour. The AA phoned me on the way to ask what happened and they said it sounded like the alternator. Despite the fact the battery light didn't flicker or even come on, which is what's happened in other cars I've owned.

He tested the battery and it was flat, the alternator isn't charging.

Quoted me £266 to fit a generic one but I declined. After he followed me home and the bonnet was opened to swap the battery back over there was a strong heat smell coming from the alternator. It wasn't burning but it definitely wasn't right so it has probably fried.

The car has the Denso alternator and CP4L have it for £217 with the discount and surcharge.

Honda is twice the price for the same Denso one.

I'm not sure about buying a used one, how long until that packs up. I spent £1500 on the car last December hoping I wouldn't need to spend much this soon but that included a Honda starter motor and battery. I might as well replace this for a new one.

Make sure it's Denso, read this thread from #41 onwards --> http://typeaccord.co.uk/forum/topic/23511-strange-batterycharging-fault/?p=246151

StuH has the same car (2.4 auto)
Interesting read thanks. Hopefully the Denso from CP4L is the same one, or could there be a difference between this one and the Honda supplied part?

You could get alternator rebuilt or some motor accessory shop offer reconditioned on a swap basis.

Thanks Stu, that's a better price! Was it branded Denso so definitely genuine and is yours the CSC29 model? The part number on the listing is slightly different to Ling's.

Did you send the old unit back for the £100 surcharge?

I did see this remanufactured Denso one as well but from reading the issues you had I think new would be best. You just don't know what parts they've used to recondition it.

That's the one I linked to in my post above yours previously. Along with a link for the Denso one from CP4L.
ooops :blush:

Lings has a facility to check a Honda part number --> http://www.lingshondaparts.com/lings_part_number_search_A10

31100-RAA-A05 comes back as ALTERNATOR ***Y. (CSC29) -->

and 31100-RAA-A01 also comes back as ALTERNATOR ***Y. (CSC29) --> http://www.lingshondaparts.com/lings_part_number_search_a10?partdes=31100-RAA-A01

Just have the same issue here at the moment, my sisters 2.2 diesel.

I am getting the old unit reconditioned, those links posted for ebay seem genuine. A 12 month warranty, you havent much to lose in my opinion, and far cheaper than a new one.

It is branded Denso, has 'made in Japan' on it which is always nice to see. I emailed them a couple of times and they confirmed it's a genuine item. The company selling it is a large well established company. You don't have to send your old unit back, you just buy that one at that price and you're done. The alternator is clearly well made and solved my problem after the previous two didn't quite work right. I'd get it though it did take a couple of days to come.

:lol: No problem mate.

Thanks for the link to the part number checker I didn't know about that so it's reassuring they're the same.

Thanks mate. Maybe the wording on the listing is for when you buy on their website then. I have bought the alternator so will get it fitted as soon as it arrives. We're going away a week today and were going to use the Accord, why do these things always happen at the wrong times! :rolleyes:

Does any one buy old alternators so I can maybe get a bit of the money back?

I'm surprised the alternator didnt give you a warning scraping sound before hand? Or did it? Anyway....

I got a rebuilt alternator from a place in Borehamwood 3 years ago, paid £170 fitted, no problems at all!

The missus did say something didn't sound right when I had pulled over before I turned the engine off. My hearing ain't great so I wouldn't of heard it. It's done a 122k miles so I guess it's at that age where it's going to fail. The starter motor went last year as well.

I received the new alternator and fitted it. Charged the battery up using my ctek charger which also reconditioned it. Started the car and went for a drive, it's made a massive difference! :)

Last December I fitted a new starter motor and battery, both Honda parts. About 2-3 months later I started getting gearbox issues, like it was changing at the wrong time and it felt quite jerky. There is still a little lag as expected with autos but the new alternator seems to have sorted this out. The gear changes are alot smoother. I'm going away tomorrow and will be doing 300+ miles over the next week so I can give it a good run.

The engine also sounds quieter. It was quite noisy last year due to a knackered water pump which was replaced but maybe the bearing was going on the alternator also. It also had a new idler pulley put on around the same time with a new belt.

Spent a fortune on this car now, I'm due a break I think!
