Honda Accord 2004
Hi all,

I am new to this. I have 04 Honda accord and about 2 weeks ago I was accelerating in second gear, when car hit 2,500revs there was a loud bang from the engine, the nose dipped and I lost a serious amount of power.
Have had the car into my mechanic and he ran diagnostics on it and came up at valve and plugs. All have been changed now but still no power. Car has been to 2 other mechanics but noone can find and issue. I have the car serviced twice a year and have had no problems at all with it.

Anyone have any similar issues and figured out the problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What model of accord? And what do you mean by no power exactly?

Which engine?
Any warning lights?
Does it still drive?

You've not given us much to go on, but this is not a common problem on any model.

At the moment all I can suggest (***uming this is a diesel) is that one of the boost pipe connections has blown off, or the intercooler has burst.

Apologies, it is 04 2.2 Diesel Honda Accord Exec. They have checked turbo, intercooler and pipes and changed erg valve and plugs (the only things showing up on diagnostic computer). No warning lights or smoke from exhaust and engine is running and car driving, it just has very little power.
All 3 mechanics have washed their hands of it, as they have all tried everything they can think of.

With regards to question about the power. Car was accelerating in second gear and at 2,500 revs a bang was heard, nose dipped and when I tried to accelerate it did so very slowly. It accelerates slow enough through first and second gear and is very slow through the rest with max speed of 55-65mph depending on the incline of the road.

Replacing the EGR valve and glow plugs were odd things to do, as they are unrelated systems. And neither would go bang! This does make me question the competency of the mechanics... unless one had been physically ejected then it couldn't possibly be a glowplug and the EGR valve could have been ruled out by temporarily blanking it to see if the power recovered (although blanking it would cause the engine warning light to come on).

Was the diagnostics performed properly interactive and target-setting? Ideally you need to connect up a Honda diagnostic system and run tests on each sub-system to find out which one is failing to perform.

Do you have Bosch service centres in ROI? This would be a far better bet than a random garage, but cheaper than a Honda dealer.

When i brought the car the mechanic, he initially thought the issue was burst intercooler pipe or intercooler but checked all pipes and intercooler and everything was fine. He then checked turbo and this too was working. He put it on the computer and only errors given where the erg valve and plugs. He did say plugs weren't the cause of the problem but I had asked to change them anyway, he also mentioned erg valve might not be the full cause of the problem but we agreed to try it. When the problem persisted, he brought to another mechanic who worked for Honda and had Honda specialised computer and he could not get any error codes and was completely at a loss to what the problem could be. He then spoke to one more mechanic who has solved similar issues with other new diesel engine cars and he mentioned that the last thing he could think of could be a software update might be required.
Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and managed to resolve it.

sounds like it had a remap in the past and one of the injectors has gone faulty (some remappers delete the DTCs)

Diagnostics shouldn't merely be about reading error codes... a decent diagnostic system should force the engine sub-systems to meet certain targets while ***essing those sub-systems performance and responses.

Your car has no boost mate. If it's not the turbo itself then it's almost certainly a torn or popped boost pipe. The bang is likely the pipe popping off. Any half decent mechanic could run some basic diagnostics to tell you this.

If you've lost power, there should be a reason why and normally error codes are stored indicating something being amiss. It's diesel, so have you misfuelled it at all? or has anyone ever misfuelled it?? open the tank cap and check for petrol smell, doesn't matter if it happened 5 years ago. If you smell petrol it could explain loss of power, then look for damage to the high pressure fuel pump.

But simpler, find the hand primer and pump it, drive it, see if there's been a change in drive.
