Hi Guys

I know there has been a lot of threads on this subject but out of interest:

I have always used Castrol Edge 0W-30 oil and changed every 6k

I have just been on to Opie Oils site and keyed in my reg and it came up with a whole range of 5w-30 oils but no 0w-30 oils, Some synthetic some fully synthetic.

Since the general consensus seems to be always use 0w-30 and indeed Honda's manual specifically states 0w-30, I telephoned them and was told that in this country we do not get cold enough to warrant 0w-30 oil and that 5w-30 oil will give slightly better protection. He seemed to think that synthetic was as good as the fully synthetic as well.

I wonder why Honda suggest 0w-30 in that case!!

The car has done 187k and still does not burn oil between changes. Would it benefit from changing to 5W-30 or should I stick with 0w-30

5w-30 is cheaper, that's the only benefit.

0w-30 is the Honda recommendation for European use, hence the need to cater for the really cold morning starts that will happen in northern and eastern regions of Europe. So 5w-30 will be OK for use in the more temperate UK and was originally a Honda recommendation for early Accord use in the UK (as shown in my owners manual).

You do need to get the supplier to clarify whether 'synthetic' means fully synthetic... Anything other than than a true FS (eg with a non-mineral base) should be avoided on cars like ours that have a turbo, where the oil gets exposed to a hostile environment and needs to be especially resilient.

Opie sound clueless. Plenty of other places sell decent FS oils at cheap prices...

Just buy the 20l Exol oil from lubetech or eBay. Excellent value.
