My 2.2 Tourer is getting ready for a new clutch and so decided to enter the details into mycarneedsa.com just to get a general idea of prices but so far the two quotes I have back are £600 and £850!

They seem rather excessive!

Anybody experience of this job. Is that time consuming?

It's a fairly large job as the subframe needs to be lowered. But any competent garage can do it these days. Budget around £200 labour + clutch kit and fluid. You might need a flywheel too but won't know until they check your old one for play. Tolerance is 3-36mm according to honda.

Hope that helps!

You sure the clutch needs replacing? Often a period of slippage corrects itself as the pressure plate self-adjuster eventually takes action and ratchets up the clamping pressure... during my 9 years/100k miles of ownership I've suffered two lengthy bouts of very noticeable clutch slipping that the car did completely recover from. Now on 182k miles and still on the original clutch!

I'd give it plenty of time and mileage before getting the clutch replaced.

No slippage at all yet just a high pedal!

If the subframe needs dropping then perhaps it will be put back in the right place and correct the caster and pulling to the left issues!

A high pedal is normal on cars with an LUK self-adjusting clutch.

I would not expect a clutch repair centre to align the sub-frame. At best they'll have marked up where it was initially and so return it to that position.

I had this done recently. It is a fairly big job. I supplied an OEM clutch kit + MTF and was quoted 550 for fitment initially by one independent and then found another for 240, so its well worth shopping around as huge differences in prices !

£550 labour? Were they replacing the engine at the same time

I would not touch it till it starts going. Mine was slipping at 110k in high gears and then settled down for another 35k. I then had further signs of wear and then went and got some quotes.

Indy was £800 but this included a new fly wheel. Holdcroft was £750 just for the clutch change. This is recommended by garages but you only need to replace it if you have lateral play or vertical play. If you mark the edge and then rotate the flywheel sideways, you can see how much it moves on the springs (lateral). To check the vertical movement you just waddle it back and forth. Play needs to be more than 2.9mm to need replacement.

Sub frame can be marked and then lines used on re ***embly. The sub frame just needs to be lowered enough on the passenger side to let the Gearbox drop down.

You don't need any special tools but do need either strong Jack or crane. You can tighten the Clutch plate up by moving slowly round the bolts with small quarter turns.

Book time is around a day but it took me 30 hours. But I wasn't in a rush and I had other commitments. 3 Piece LUK kit cost me £117, so £150 with GB fluid.

My car is an 08 and I love it. But it has 144k and is only worth 2k, so I decided to do it myself, as I have worked on cars/motorbikes a great deal.

If you do go to an INDY make sure they understand and check the cruise control switch and check and adjust the clutch pedal.

@ Fahad - I know I almost keeled over ! Also, as mentioned above make sure they adjust the clutch pedal for the CC switch  athough tbf this is reasonably easy to do yourself :)

Thanks for the replies. Will leave it alone for now then but going to be towing the rally car soon so that might be a kill or cure!!
