Hi, has anyone used a vacuum oil extractor pump for removing the engine oil via the dipstick tube and or the manual gearbox oil for DIY servicing?

Yep, I use the PELA 6000. Brilliant bit of kit.
I tend to use this usually in the winter for my interim oil changes and then drain the oil from the sump as normal during the summer months.

The extractor doesn't suck all the oil out though, 100/150ml of oil will remain but shouldn't cause any issues if you change the oil regulary and properly drain it yearly.

Ideal for the ICTDI as the oil filter is on top so no need to jack the car up.

I wouldn't recommend using the extractor soley for oil changes though. The sump does need to be drained once in a while.

Having said that, most garages nowadays use the extraction method as its cheaper and saves time.

Thanks for that, same brand I was looking at too, as you say oil filter on the I-CDT location is a dream. Was looking at the pump to possibly drain the manual g/box, maybe a bit tricky.

Some car manufacturers don't fit engine sump plugs anymore, saves on there manufacturing costs. Maybe they design the sump to pool the oil under the dipstick tube, but like you say 100ml left in is no real problem.

Your welcome. Its a great bit of kit and as you say the filter is no top so its a dream to service.

Havent used it for the gearbox but would probably be best to drain the gearbox the usual way as gearbox oil has a long interval change.

yeah, I think the smart car has no sump and the oil is extracted as standard.

When I first used the Pela 6000, I sucked the oil out first then jacked the car and drained the sump to see how much was left hence finding out there was approx 100/150ml drained.

Used it around 8 times now and its still going, so its pretty reliable.

I'm dubious of the efficiency of using one, but gravity and hot oil can still be a pig to get rid, plus the chance of damaging the thread on the sump.

All other Honda vehicles I've owned have a magnet on the sump bolt, is there one on the diesel ?

It is a pretty good bit of kit but definitely not something to entirely replace in draining the oil the usual way.
I would always drain the oil on extended intervals. Granted some cars dont have this option and not everyone can jack a car up where they live, i.e. on a busy main road etc.

I've never known any Honda that comes with a magnetic sump plug as standard. They usualy upgraded by the previous owner.
The sump plug on all Honda's is a standard bolt (17mm i think) - unless the new Honda's nowadays come with one as standrad?

Always used to upgrade my previous Honda's with a skunk2 magnetic sump plug. Not to bothered with that stuff now.

Now you have me thinking. The three bikes I ride each have a magnet in the sump bolt. Perhaps they are aftermarket ones fitted by the previous owners.
