So after getting a puncture today I used the compressor to try and get home. So after stopping 3 times to top with air, the compressor stopped working. Fuse had blown and melted a bit. So replaced with a new 15a fuse and now the socket is dead. Have checked all other fuses but all OK. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Can of compressed air and and magnet! Give the thing a clean out, make sure no dirt's down there shorting it out or anything. Then, if it's still dead, but the fuse is good, check the connections at the back with a multimeter, then round the front. Essentially trace back until you get 12 volts on the multi. That should tell you where the problem is. You'll probably need to remove some of the trim around it. Start with the gear lever surround. Give it a good tug, then start unscrewing and pulling stuff out around the ashtray. You'll get there soon enough.

Thanks for the reply. So have just put a voltage meter on the connection of the socket and there is power, so when I connect the lighter socket and test that it's dead no voltage as far as I can see there is nothing melted or anything to cause it not to work? Confused!

How about if you try a different device in there, like a USB charger or something. Perhaps it's the lighter filament itself, not the socket?

Have tried different chargers and nothing on the amp meter either!

Strange. Maybe it's a mechanical fault. In that when something's in there it's breaking the circuit unintentionally. Maybe take the socket out and give it a once over. Is the socket in the boot the same? If you don't use the boot socket, maybe you could swap them over... see if the boot's one works when installed in the centre console.

So it was the socket itself, put in a new one today and now back with power. Happy days.

Must have been something in the connection mechanism that when you inserted something it broke the connection... Glad it's sorted.

Glad you got it sorted but now look on ebay for a spare wheel and save yourself all the hassle that comes with pumps and slave wheels. Got mine with a good tyre for £40.

Sometimes it can be as simple as a car with passengers on the hard shoulder, a full boot, or temporary misplacement of the security tool that knocks the head on a roadside wheel change.

A faulty cigarette socket is often down to previous owners being smokers, where the electrics underneath have charred, then corroded to nothing over the years.

The secondary unit in the back of the Accord saves dragging the compressor lead over the roof or through open doors.

The compressor and temporary sealant are kept in the same place the spare wheel and security tool goes. :p
