Hi All,

Ignition barrel in my 1999 (T-reg) Honda Accord seems to have died as the key hardly moves away from the OFF position. I just managed to get home after turning detached ignition switch with a screwdriver to start the engine and meanwhile moving the key a bit to un(b)lock the steering wheel.

After a glance at several related threads here I understand that bringing the barrel to a locksmith to fix some tumblers and/or whatever is the best option as it doesn't require another key. Is there anything critical to be aware of before I even start removing the barrel? For instance will immobilizer "forget" the key when detached from the barrel (or perhaps upon unplugging the connector with wires from it), needing reprogramming even for the same key once it's installed back onto the fixed barrel? If the locksmith can't fix my barrel I'd like to be able to install it back and get home in the same fashion I did earlier today, and then drive around looking for a barrel and key set.

Also do I get it right that the immobilizer chip is definitely in the key itself and not in the remote, so that if I have to swap the barrel I'll have to always keep my original key near the immobilizer to avoid the need to program new key into it? And if I still decide to program new key into it will it remember both keys or only the new one?

Prompt replies (ideally by tomorrow morning) would be much appreciated as if I have to buy a barrel I'll go and buy the one selling in my area at the moment.

Many thanks in anticipation!

It turns out the worn key is contributing to the issue: just got it working with the 2nd key that I discovered among the spares. Another contributor seems to be sticking lever that keeps the steering wheel/shaft locking bolt retracted while the key is not in the OFF position, so I'll probably remove it completely and stick something inside to keep that bolt in permanently retracted position instead.

Where can I buy (retail) reasonably priced decent quality split wafers aka tumblers that'd let me repair the barrel myself? At 19 years of use they're likely about to go anyway, in fact surprising they lasted that long (seeing many reports about barrel issues with various Honda models).
