Apparently I managed the impossible and killed a Honda engine

I drive an 08 Accord estate 2.2 i-dtec and driving home from work on Sunday evening and the car decides to be a bit noisier and it felt like it wanted to be a in a lower gear than I was using. I nursed the car the rest of the 40 miles home, it going between louder than normal and normal, no overheating, no engine management light, no oil light, no warning lights at all and the fuel economy was what I would normal expect on the way home.

Booked the car in with the local Honda garage for their first available appointment which was yesterday and told them what had happened and that I knew it would be a wee bit low on oil as it's due an oil change next month. I asked them to find out what was wrong with it as I need a car for work

Honda sent me their 'visual inspection' video late on yesterday which basically said we've listened to your engine and it sounds like you need a new engine, not great news we know but lets move on to your tyres, brakes etc. The quote that came along with it then said that it would cost a further £530 to actually find out what was wrong plus whatever parts needed, again looking likely that it would be a new engine. So £55 later I have a report from Honda that says that my engine sounds rough, that my oil was low but not worryingly so and that my brakes and back rear tyre need replaced sometime soonish.

On the plus side the parts manager did say that it's practically unheard of for a Honda engine to fail.

So it would appear my foray into Honda ownership is done for now :(
 
My Honda died a few weeks ago. Oil pressure failed.

They may have once been special, but imo Honda cars and engines made this century are really no better than other manufacturers.
 
modern diesels have killed any sense of what reliable used to be. Can wait for the petrol revolution.
 
Sorry to hear this. Did you keep an eye on your oil? Was it low?

A hoist, a second hand ebay engine, and a man of your talents = job done.

Possibly worth it for the OP, but cheapest I've seen an i-CTDi is £350. This was without a turbo (and I can't rely on my turbo bearings having survived) so I also need a turbo. Be daft not to fit a clutch while the engine's out (maybe a DMF as well?) and the exhaust manifold is another weak point that may need replacing with the later part (my old one was blowing). Oh perhaps I should also fit new chains as well, just to be sure? So I'm now up to about £1,500 or so... how much is an old Accord worth?

Shame though, it was a great ride and I'll struggle to find a driver's seat that comfortable. Now looking at P3 Volvo V70s!

Sounds a bit vague, to be honest. I realise you don't want to keep throwing money at it but maybe get a second opinion from a Honda specialist (NOT a dealer) or a Bosch Service Centre?

Lots of things can make a worrying noise. Your model is known to develop a problem with the EGR pipework, which can make odd noises, smells and affects the running. I would not necessarily trust all Honda dealership 'technicians' to find this!
 
Yes, well, when a source tells us for example that a Tourer tailgate should always be shut automatically when said tailgate has a manual handle installed in it, or that lack of a splashguard is an MOT fail, we realise that even the most wonderful people of all aren't always infallible.

Watch out for the airconditioning on the V/S 70's
Its made out of chocolate.

Not sure if newer ones are better. I had an old one and that failed every 4 years with a significant bill
