What brake discs for Type S 180 Dtec Tourer

Evening all,

The time has come for new discs on my Dtec 180 Type S tourer. The fronts are badly worn and I think there seems to be a bit of a crack forming and I think while I'm at it I may as well do the rears as I don't know how old they are. I'm pretty sure the front discs on the Type S are larger than the standard cars and being a tourer its got disc/drums on the rear.

Obviously I could just got to a local motor factor and order some, but are there any brands that are recommended. Specifically I'd like some that the centres don't rust immediately. Many OEM discs seem to have some sort of silver/grey coating that seems to keep them looking good for longer. I know I could go OEM if I'm looking for OEM quality but I'm old and ugly enough to know that Honda don't make discs so someone must make them for them and the Honda ones are quite pricey at £120 each from what I've seen listed.

In my mind Pagid have got a coating on them but that might only have come to me in a dream and the only people who seem to sell them are Eurocarparts and the larger diameter discs are out of stock and have been for 2 weeks.

Any recommendations would be great.

Sorry for the lack of reply, I've been busy with a teething baby!

I've just been another look and most places seem to list 2 different sizes for the front discs and and the same rears for tourers and the saloons but I was under the impression that saloons didn't have drum handbrake. MTEC list 296mm and also 320mm. I've been trying to cross reference to diagrams on Lings parts and they don't list sizes but it does seem that both Type S saloon and tourer have drums while lower powered cars have disc handbrake and lower powered models also have a different part number for front discs than Type S.

MTEC do different options for their disc.

Grooved
C Hook
Drilled grooved
Dimmpled Grooved
Drilled only.

Strangely they don't seem to list just plain discs but I do like the look of drilled discs like on the front of newish Mercs. My only experience of non-plain discs was a pair of ebay special grooved discs on my diesel 205 12 years ago and with EBC greenstuff pads they made a horrible whirring noise when braking hard so I changed back to the standard discs, but as I say they were something like £30 on ebay so I shouldn't have had high hopes. Anyone got any experience of drilled discs?

Sorry to drag this all up again. I just haven't had chance to order stuff, but I'm off for a fortnight so I'll have chance to get them done.

I was going to go for the MTEC ones, but to be honest I can't really justify the extra cost of them + the coating at the moment so was looking at other options. Eurocarparts have never got the Pagid discs in stock, but I think I've settled on Delphi ones. The only problem is, as with everything for the Type S 180 Tourer, is the sites never know what parts the car has got.

I think its 320mm discs on the front so these http://www.autosessive.com/products/800/delphi-brake-disc-set
but it also gives me a choice for pads, for the 320mm discs it lists http://www.autosessive.com/products/1834/delphi-brake-pads for ATE calipers.

Going by the rear caliper saying NISSIN, I thought the pads would be these http://www.autosessive.com/products/3727/delphi-brake-pads, but if I click on 305mm discs, it says the pads should be these http://www.autosessive.com/products/3676/delphi-brake-pads which are for Akebono calipers

I also checked what it says for a 2.4 which I thought shared brakes with the Type S 180, and it shows the pads for the rear Akebono calipers.

Can anyone confirm, or am I best pulling a wheel off and checking the shape of the pads.

Well I've just pulled a wheels off one side, and I'm still confused. The rear pad definately says Nissin on it, but the shape of the pad and the dimensions match up with the pad for the AKE caliper. I did wonder if someone had fitted the wrong pads at the back at some point, but they are tight in the carrier and the other pads are nearly 5mm longer so theres no chance of fitting them. Should I just go with the picture and measurements and ignore the difference in caliper manufacturer? Or even hedge my bets and order both sets and set back whatever doesnt fit? I've looked at Delphis own cataloge and that says the same as the Autosessive site.
 
Update time!

Just come in from doing my brakes and managed to avoid the rain!

I ordered the front and rear sets of Delhi discs and pads from Autosession via ebay, and ordered them based on the disc size and hoped that the pads that they matched to them fitted.

All fitted perfectly so job well done. The rears are coated so should stay looking nice, the front aren't coated but there's not much left to see because of the size of the braking surface.

And to follow up from my sticky caliper thread a few weeks ago it was the outer pad of the drivers side rear that was worn so it seems like the caliper slide pins were a bit sticky and not the piston. I cleaned it all up last Sunday morning and have been away this week on holidays about 100 miles away and it's been spot on so that's another thing off the list!
 
Well done, I replaced the rear discs on my 7Gen EX Tourer with TRW, when I first got the car, also rebuilt the rear calipers with plenty of red rubber grease inside the piston seals and lubed the slider pins, I had not further trouble in the 2.5 years after that.
Its my contention that a good rebuild that you do yourself taking time and plenty of the proper brake lube pays dividends in terms of preventing brake sticking and corrosion which can be a problem on these cars or indeed any cars that see winter roads.
