Need to replace the front nearside bottom ball joint.

Am I correct in thinking that I need to remove the driveshaft and hence the hub and drop the new ball joint in from the top?

If so then can somebody please confirm that the driveshaft nut is standard right hand thread before I attack it tonight with a big impact driver??

No ideally you have to remove the whole hub/knuckle for access and that just pulls off the spline while the drive shaft can remain in place, yes it's a standard RH thread.

This vid is generally spot on including his mistakes like trying to remove the ABS sensor which is seized and he ends up breaking, leave it in place and disconnect it further up from the loom instead, you can also leave the disk attached but it's no biggy.

Do you have all the tools? You'll need a ball joint seperator and a means of pressing in the joint and ideally replace both sides if you can, there's a supplier on fleabay selling Meyle joints for less than £30 which are high quality

Just managed to break the driveshaft nut with a borrowed impact wrench. Wow I really need one of those!!

Anyway yes got ball joint splitter but not a press!

I'm actually replacing it because the grease has all dried up and it's creaking so is there anyway to re-grease it rather than go through the removal?

No there is no play in the joint at all and passed MOT no problem a couple of months ago so very loath to replace it.

All the grease has just dried up and it's stiff to rotate.

Will try re-packing it with grease and see how it goes. Least I know how it all comes apart now !!

Boot is in good condition as well.

If its creaking I would replace the entire balljoint, these do fail on occasion and its better safe than sorry with a critical part like this.

For future reference I borrowed a unversal pressing kit off a mate that you can buy off fleabay for about fifty quid, ten quid for a seperator and technically you could do both sides including the ball joints for £90. That's if you have an impact driver and a reasonable set of tools or pay £120 a corner for somebody else to do it but I agree with Huan better to replace than to repair.
