7th gen 2.2 accord
Hi all it may or may not have been covered but i cant find anything through the search, so im sorry if its been covered a million times but i need info... i have an 05 accord 2.2 ctdi exec 5 speed manual and i do a lot of motorway mileage, so ideally id want to fit a 6 speed, (i also need to change the flywheel as its starting to rumble so the perfect time to do it as ill have the gearbox out already) i was wondering what is involved in changing to the 6 speed and whether a 6 speed from a cicic or crv or something with the same 2.2cdti engine would fit or if it would have to be from another accord? I know ill need the 6 speed gear knob but will i need a different clutch or any other parts?

The facelift 7th gen Accord got a 6 speed box so that should cover it, same clutch etc. I was always wondering about how the gearing then aligns with the mapping of the ecu?? Does that come into play at all??

My two penneth: Unless the one you've got currently is an outstanding example, I'd be looking for a 55 / 06 replacement, with the 6 speed box already fitted. Plus you might benefit from the other facelift improvements (improved manifold and timing chain spring to mind)

Mine is a 55 plate so im guessing it just missed out on the 6 speed box and the improved manifold is that exhaust or intake? And whats different about the chain? Plus mines not an outstanding example having done 230k+ miles its just to get to and from work and drive the family about im just looking for a few ways to make day to day cheaper.

If you have a search around you'll find threads about the exhaust manifold cracking. I believe it was a recall item for a while. Usually identified by fumes in the cabin.

The chain is / was prone to rattling (occasionally letting go  ) at higher mileages, seemingly exacerbated by dirt held in oil changed too infrequently through the car's life -again there's threads about it somewhere.

I understand there were improvement to both on the facelift.

Whilst I had it, my own '05 pre-facelift suffered from neither issue, so I'm not speaking from personal experience.

Whilst it might be an interesting project, I think the economy improvement you might see will take a long time to pay for the effort & cost of the replacement gearbox: I averaged a little over 48mpg in my 5 speed 7th gen. In my 6 speed 8th gen (same driving style and commute) I'm getting about 53mpg (iDTEC vs iCTDI might come into it too). That's on fuel receipts over many years, not the trip computer. 5mpg is worth having, but you're looking at a lot of work to get it...

I think Matt is being rather kind, you haven't found any threads on it because nobody has ever thought it was worth bothering to do.

Unless you actually need to replace the gear box that is an almighty faff to try and save yourself a few bucks on the running costs of a fourteen year old car that's nearly done a quarter of a million miles and isn't the best example by your own admission. You could make that saving by changing your driving style or put the money towards a facelift vehicle with lesser miles, nowadays you could probably find a 100k car for less that £1500.

Antdad changing the gearbox would of been a secondary job as ill have it out anyway to change the flywheel (as it needs doing) i just wanted to know if one from a civic or crv would fit as its the same engine i just wondered if all the other bits were the same i.e. clutch connector, drive shafts, mounting points.

I know it would be a small saving but boxes from civics are cheaper and 5mpg (if it was that) still helps when you do a 60mile round trip everyday.

If the DMF needs replacing then you should naturally replace the clutch as well as a second hand box, that's around £400 in parts alone which I and others still maintain you'd be better off putting into a newer vehicle.

As for the info you require I suspect you'd only get that from a specialist, perhaps try your local dealership, gearbox specialist or Japanese breakers if you could find it at all. Given what we already know about Honda parts and their lack of interchangeability even though it's the same engine I wouldn't take that punt unless you know for absolute certain.

I had a look at boxes on fleabay and there are plenty of them, I didn't notice the equivalent Civic icdti box being that much cheaper but again why increase the chances of it not working for the few quid saved given the amount of work required and the general lack of info there is. I like to save money on motoring as much as the next man but the changes you're looking to make verses the risk reward and effort are not worth it imo.
