Hey Guys,
Been a very long day but let me start from the beginning…

Thursday 03/03/2011
As many of you know I took the car for its second MOT, passed again with no advisories and everything worked as perfect, and when I say perfect I mean that too! Drove the car as normal all day Thursday and parked it in the drive as normal in the evening…

Friday 04/03/2011
I needed to pick up a parcel in the morning from the local Royal Mail delivery office and went as normal and the car drove spot on as it normally does till on the way back home on overtaking it took slightly longer to speed up than normal… I didn’t think anything of it and was nearly home by this time… in the afternoon I was on my way to Uni and now the car was seriously struggling to speed up and was constantly over revving… then I knew it… CLUTCH SLIPPING! This is the first ever time it has done this and on this day, I have never noticed this before so it means it’s started now! I then called up Mr Honda (CJ) just to make sure I was correct and it was the case… I didn’t want to boast it on the forum just yet so only CJ knew… (Thanks for info CJ)
I drove home carefully not trying to cause any further damage, then after making a few phone calls and speaking to my dad, looking to buy a new clutch kit, cutting a long story short I bought a new one from Hepworth Honda, Huddersfield. Paul the parts manager is a fantastic bloke and did me a really good deal, let’s just say cheaper than local motor factors, and best of all he said there was one ready to collect for me the next morning! He even printed out around 32 odd pages guide on what to remove and how to fit… which was really nice of him though we didn’t use much of it!

Saturday 05/03/2011
8.30am set off to Hepworth Honda to collect the kit… everything was ready and even managed to get another £2.99 discount on the kit LOL better than nothing! 9.30am I arrived at my dad’s friends garage… the plan was for us both to fit the clutch… the actual fitting of the new part I left to him as I have never done this before but the most of the removal of bits was done by me, which is always a good feeling when working on your own car!
Here are the new parts…

Time to remove the bits just so we could get to a few bolts on the gearbox…

Manifold was removed too, as it was already out; I gave the throttle body a good clean too…

IMG_0429.jpg

Now it was time to lower part the sub frame to get access…
IMG_0430.jpg

Once all the bolts were removed here is the problem… really bad burning smell too …
IMG_0431.jpg

IMG_0432.jpg

Time to remove the old clutch… the release bearing was very stiff which caused the screeching when setting off on the petrol models as well as the hard clutch pedal feel… but this was all soon to be gone! ;-)…
IMG_0433.jpg

New clutch plate VS old clutch plate, massive difference, old clutch plate is very thin, and is past its last legs… it’s just weird that I started getting clutch slip all of a sudden and never before…

New pressure plate VS old plate, the old plate had a groove on the surface so this was basically battered! I did get stuck in snow back in winter 2009 and I smelt the same burning smell back then after I tried to free myself lol, so from then it’s lasted over a year which isn’t too bad …

Funny the box says Made in Japan but only the release bearing & clutch plate are Japanese. ..

All that was fitted and now the clutch is lovely despite it being 6:30pm when we finished!
It is very soft and travels perfect and the biting point is spot on too, just like a brand new car! Very pleased… and all in all it cost me just short of £270 fitted and that included fuel costs to collect the clutch and also my dinner for the day... oh and a tenner tip for the mechanic! ;-) I even learnt how to change a clutch!
I am just grateful that my dad knows a lot of people in the motor trade and it was possible to get this done on a Saturday at such short notice, so really only drove less than one day with clutch slip… the car did struggle getting up the M606 on the way back from Huddersfield in the morning… couldn’t get past 55mph without slipping! LOL

Thanks for reading guys! ;)

nice work Jav good one

bit much having to take the inlet manifold of to do the job init they don't make cars like they used to!

it was well and truly worn out wasn't it how many miles has your car done?

Nice one mate...looking forward to reading this on a big screen (for the pics)

Mate why in earth has the technician or can I call him that removed the intake and throttle body , was unable to remove the lower cross member or did he not attempt it.

CJ he did not attempt it, gave me a good chance to clean up under there, took a bit longer maybe but a good result in the end... yeh u can call him a technician lol hes an ex Porsche mechanic ;)

car has done nearly 80k miles, but not sure on how the last owner drove it lol, but saying that I did burn the clutch quite a bit in winter 2009 when I was stuck in snow... my fault probs :(

Nice one mate...looking forward to reading this on a big screen (for the pics)

lol I tried to load up the post on my iPhone earlier & it took forever so gave up lol

Good work, but this is one how to i will not be attempting.

its not as hard as it looks mate, just need to take some bits off and have the right tools, the actual fitting of the new clutch took 5 mins, its just getting to the damn thing lol

Nice pics and write up Jav.

Whats the mileage on your car?

Thanks mate, nearly 80k...

Nice job Jav. Looks like this mechanic knew what he was doing. I would however think the petrol clutch would last longer though, atleast 100k but i'm sure your right foot hasn't helped lol.
That pressure plate looks very knackered, hope the flywheel hasn't been scorched too much, what was the condition?
Just let this clutch bed in and you'll enjoy it very much plus no more release bearing noise.

nice one jav glad to hear its all sorted mate...good write up too.

Sorry to hear about your clutch problems bro. It lasted only 80k? Do you have a secret turbocharger in there that we don't know about? It looks absolutely mashed.

Reckon he's been feeding it vpd on the sly?

so thats his secret to beating the diesel hands down :p

 I ain't starting another one ;)

Just had a look on the big screen - man that old clutch looks nicely toasted!

80k clutch slip, on a petrol, yikes! Nice to see you helping out to get to done. Yeah 270 isnt bad for a honda clutch.

I fear this is something i might have to do soon, the bite point it getting mushy now.

but good write up!!! Should this be the DIY section?

Good point, moved.

Great write up Jav and good photos to.
