Hi everyone

Wondering if someone could help with an issue I'm having with my 1999 Honda Accord Coupe 2.0esi

I've had the car for around 3 years now
and every so often the immobiliser light will not come on when the key is in the ignition
therefore the car will not start
the engine would turn over but it will not start

after leaving the key in the ignition for around 5-10, the immobiliser (green key light on dash) would light up
allowing me to start the car

this issue has become more frequent

I've tried using different keys, locking doors different ways, turning key slowly all difference types of combinations

I've also removed the covering around the steering wheel and used 1 key to turn the ignition and held the other in different places around the dash
to try and kick in the immobiliser

I've done some research and people are saying it could be the EFI main relay (Fuel)

On the AA website they have a recall for this issue
http://www.theaa.com/allaboutcars/recalls/recalls.jsp?&makeName=Honda&modelID=A6&modelName=Accord&makeId=B5&lowIndex=3
option 5

I called Honda. They said there is currently no recall on my car
My car had been previously recalled due to option 4 (mulitplex - dash board lights). This was back in 2009 and on the AA site it was launched in 2004
took them a whole 5 years to get in contact

anybody got any ideas?

I'm also getting a buzzing noise from the glovebox
could be unrelated
maybe a motor gone faulty?

thanks in advance

Hi Joe,

No idea regarding the imobilizer, however, I too had a buzzing noise coming from the glovebox recently, sounded like a loose screw vibrating and was driving me mad (depending on where the revs where). Discovered it was a loose screw. Open the passenger door and carefully pull off the insert immediately to the left of the glovebox. You will see three screws, tighten them up and this may fix your rattling/buzzing noise. I have also discovered that (again, depending on the revs) the glovebox catch vibrates too.

Good luck.

Welcome to TA Joe im going to state the obvious now but make sure your battery is ok in the car and also in your key fob

battery is grand and keyfob is grand
been testing it with both the key and the fob
dont want to drop it to a honda dealer to get fleeched :(

I don't think the fob battery effects the immobiliser - certainly not on the 7th gen anyway....

But you will either have to bite the bullet and go to Honda, or take it to an Auto electrician and hope he is as good as the chap another member saw recently - run a search (I can't remember what it was for though).

thanks for the welcome brett

Bond - it sounds like a motor rather than a loose screw
im going to take the glove box out to get a closer look
could really do with a mecanics manual

No idea Joe, however, rest ***ured that this is the best Accord forum on the net and there will be someone who will know what the problem is and help you out. I only discovered this forum a few weeks ago and am already pally with a few members, in fact, I'm meeting one at the weekend (hopefully) who is helping me out. Good luck and don't forget to search for an answer beforehand as I have found that 99.9% of questions have been answered before somewhere on the forum.

had my bro in law over
charging the battery at the mo
he is thinking it might be a faulty relay or a short somewhere
its so intermittent - if you leave it for a while with the car locked, leave the key in the ignition onto the immobiliser light comes on or persisent inserting the key in the ignition IT WORKS :)
time consuming though

also note that the throttle light (yellow)does not come on when the immobilisher light does not come on

worth buying a haynes manual?

Is there a 6th Gen Haynes yet?

just been on the haynes website and only list US accords not UK spec, unhappy times as has been bible for many past cars, mine only seems to make a noise from the glovebox when heater fan is on full

doing some research on the internet

ecm may need reset
or
igition switch

was going to drop it to Honda to do an initial investigation
about £42 for half an hour

main relay is the issue

anyone know of any good companies I would get Honda parts from

Hi joe im a auto spark and if ur looking for the main relay, i would be going to the scrappys :D I no all hondas around 1995 to 2002 use the same main relay box.

but you can normaly fix them lol if you open the box up. theres two releys inside and the metal contacts are visable. get ur self a nail file and buff the contact points this will remove suit that builds up over time.

best of luck m8 and let us no how you get on :)

buffed it up and resoldered
not as frequent as it was before. but was still happening

went and purchased a new one off honda (50 quid :( )
but at least I know the issue is sorted

dodgy american parts
siemens vrm-0022

replacement was a jap part
