For a while now the ABS light on my dash had been intermittantly going on and off, well recently its decided to stay. Im a little confused because I think I can feel it pumping under hard braking.

Before I get into the realms of taking sensors apart and replacing them would a diagnostic tell me exactly where the problem lies, or would it just point out a problem and not location? I notice on another thread someone said that
...... very kindly diagnosed it as a faulty rear left ABS sensor ....
which gives me the impression that a diagnostic would locate the fault.

If so, how much am I looking at for a test at a regular garage that has the means to plug in?

Thanks

hi bud whats your cars year and engine size? i have all the no how for the 6gen ABS system

:)

Not sure the abs system shows up on obd.

Think you need to use snap-on readers... it is the case for 7th gens anyway.

the 7th Gen & 6th Gen both OBD 2 but the 7th is live Can Bus ie it is linked to all computers on the car.

the 6th gen has only K line and L line witch will do EML, the OBD socket is not linked to the ABS system.

look under the glove box and you will find two blue plugs that are cliped into holders, the first is a 2 wire plug and the second is a 5 wire plug.

you want plug 2.

with the keys out fit a wire ( bridge ) across pins 3 and 5. now put the key in and turn it to ign ie till the dash lights come on and the ABS light will start to flash.

this is called blink codes. if you get 4rappid flashes this 100s then set is 10s and the slowest set will 1s

so for example if like me you got 4 rappid flashes then 2 and then 3 quick flashes like ****---*--*---*-*-*-------starts again

this would = 123 code

the ABS system will reset its self after the Ign has been on and off 20 times

please let me no if you under stand me :) it can be hard to describe but very easy to do :)

sorry i for got to say  post up the fault code you get and al let you no what it refers too :)

Right....done what you said and thought it would be best to video it for you to see for yourself if you don't mind.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pj6fnuF1iOQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player

It repeated this over and over. Not sure entirely what was meant by ABS will reset after turning ignition 20 times tho. Light still on, is that correct?

Many thanks in advance.

code 11 = wheel speed sensor, right front open circuit

the drivers side front has a fualt somewhere. start at the sensor and follow the wire back into the car looking for anywhere its been damaged.

if ok then there is a orange connector for the speed sensor just as it runs into the engine bay if you unplug it and get a volt meter, set it to messure ohms and connect it too the speed sensor side, jack up the drivers side and spin the wheel the reading should be in the range of 470 ohms to 2000 ohms

if its above 2000ohms then i would check the CV joint as this has the ABS ring on it and its common for grease out the CV boot to block the sensor, if its clean then i would be thinking about replacing the sensor.

good video btw :)

if the fualt is fixed then the abs light will still come on till the Ign has been turned on and off 20 times this is the reset procedure, if the fualt still exsits then the ABS light will stay on.

Brilliant amount of info, thank you. Will give it a bash when/if rain stops.

any luck? would like to here you got this sorted

Hello mate.
Sorry I havent got round to replying to this. Sadly ive not touched this as there is always something that needs doing. Grrr.
Ive got an update on the boot thing, which ive been working on all day, a bit later this evening. Driving me to complete insanity.

Next weekend WILL be the ABS thing though! B)

Ok

This morning I have tried what you said. It actually doesnt read any ohms at all, but we tested the nearside just to be sure we had set the reader up correctly. Nearside read 1500ohms when spinning the wheel.

Any idea what it could mean if it reads 0 on offside? Would you call that a faulty sensor?

sorry i totally missed the fact that you had replied  if its reading 0 omhs then its not connected and i would defo say the sensor is at fualt!

bit more info on ABS system:- once fault has been fixed the car must be driven upto 15~20mph THEN the ABS light will go out.
