I have 2 6th.Gen autos. I have a 2000 2.0i Exec SE Auto (bought 2003) and a 2001 Type-V 2.3i Auto (bought 2010). I would expect the latter to be slightly heavier on fuel than the 2.0 say 1-2mpg but it seems to be a lot heavier than that i.e. 3-4mpg heavier.

Does anyone know if that's right?

I do record the details at every fill up and I know they are used differently (wife commutes using the type-v) but I wouldn't have expected that difference. I'm comparing the figures against when she used the 2.0 for commuting. My experience of the 2.0 is that if you really want to burn fuel you can (VTEC) but you can also nurse it to save fuel when you have to and I recently managed 38mpg driving down from Fort William although IMHO that was a once off.

According (!) to the Honda workshop manual, the gearing on the auto Accords was changed from the 2001 year model. I'm ***uming that was to make it more responsive. The type-v does hold the gears longer than the 2.0 does. Although I still prefer the 2.0 auto, I can understand why they changed it as driving the 2.0 gearbox is an acquired taste if you've driven another auto (like my 1990 accord or Rover 827).

PS the joke about my wife having a "heavy right foot" has already been cracked!

Hi
I think the 2.3 is heavy on fuel generally and because you have auto's that makes it worse. If you want fuel economy the 2.3 aint the way to go

What are the different weights of the cars?

Will I get at least 34 mpg with the 2.0 auto exec , I seriously hope my heart not ruling my head (pocket) . 4 days till i get this , do I do a runner since no deposit is paid ,na I couldn't do that ,could I !!

Depends on what you use it for. My 2.0 is the 4-dr 2000 year model exec se satnav AUTO ie the top of the range one without the rear parking sensors i.e it's heavy.
I have mpg figures for it since 2003 at every fill up. I am not a slow driver but then I don't drive it for performance. I'd buy a type-R if I did :).
I use cruise control a lot on long runs where appropriate so that helps (my wife won't use CC at all). I know it will drink fuel if you do need performance because
that is what is supposed to do. I know it has the reserves to get me out of trouble if needed (and it has).

Remember it's an auto with a mechanical lockup on 4th. This Accord is mostly used for long distance work/holidays these days and from July 2010 to July 2011
it has averaged 30.7mpg but that was dragged down by 2 fillups where it only did 25mpg during the bad winter. Normally it's around 31-32mpg.
On the other hand, my 2.3i V-type auto averaged 25.46mpg over the same period. The best one was 29.29mpg after one long run with me driving.
But that was it's only long run as it has been used for a 25mile round trip commute into Milton Keynes each day. By my wife...

You will get more mpg with a manual. Personally, I would buy another auto and fit it with lpg *provided* it is a low mileage example & in excellent condition. Ideally
that would be an atlantic blue/ivory trim 5-dr auto 2.0 exec se satnav/rear parking sensors but I haven't found one yet!

Does anyone know why it is a lot heavier? Does anyone else have an auto type-v & can comment? I expected it to be slightly heavier than the 2.0
but not by 3-4mpg. Unlike the honda 2.3 fitted to the previous generation of Accord and Rover 623GSi, the engine isn't the DOHC version...
(which I wouldn't touch.. head problems due to lack of adequate water space) it's the same as the 2.0 SOHC but different bore/stroke.

We have a peugeot 106 diesel... now that's economy... 60-65mpg! But pretty basic and not the sort of car you drive long distances in! :)
Years ago I had a Rover 827Si with the 2.7 V6 Honda engine & did 250k miles with it.. it was a manual and I used to get 30-32 mpg out of
it but that was all motorway work and petrol was a lot cheaper then ;-)

I will check but from what I remember when I bought the v-type last year, there wasn't much difference in weight. The cars are identical except
the 2.0 is 4-dr with satnav and the 2.3 is 5-dr without satnav but slightly more power. The Accord Manual isn't much help... just gives a range of values!

Hi,

I have got a manual 2.3 and on petrol can get around the low 30s. On one occasion when I did manage 460 miles to a full tank before the light came on but it was seriously boring - mostly motorway at 55 mph.

When I'm on LPG I usually average 28mpg, but I don't worry about using the climate control and will do 70 when possible. At the moment (for the last couple of months) it has dropped to around 24mpg on gas but I think that is down to a dodgy EGR valve and/or IAC valve (I think).

I test drove an auto a couple of years ago and noticed that it revs slightly higher at the same speed than a manual.

Do you still have you 90 Accord or do you mean that was a past car?

Many thanks for info. That's just what I needed to know... especially about the lpg consumption.
The 2.0 auto seems to do about 3000rpm @70mph which is what I usually set the cruise control to (well within tolerance) on the motorway.
I must admit I rarely run it with the climate control set to auto... it's usually set to manual & I switch the aircon
on/off as appropriate. This is just habit from when I used to use the 1990 accord for long runs. In mid-July I managed to get from Fort William to Northampton before
the fuel light came on (462 miles) and I kept to normal speeds on the motorway with SWMBO driving the non-motorway sections.
The 2.3 auto v-type seems to run at 3100rpm @ 70mph which is similar to my old 1990 auto accord and Rover 827 (both 3200rpm@70mph). The v-type is the 2001
year model & I've ***umed that all the auto accords after 2001 are geared similarly. I need to take the v-type out on a few long runs so I can get
some figures for that type of driving.

I bought it in 1994 and I still have it... it is currently in a friend's bodyshop having the wheel arch rust looked at "properly". After 20 years it started looking tatty in places. Mechanically it is just fine. I think it's better to drive than the later two Accords I have but it has a lousy turning circle.....

However I HAVE NEVER liked the colour. It's Nobel Silver ie s**tty grey metallic !!!!!

You keep hold of that, its rare, only 2400 left in the UK, and i have 2 of them!

Edit: yes turning circle is a bit pants, Thats because of the racing steering rack ratio :D

What is really annoying is 3 years ago I had the chance to buy a low mileage 2.2i Aerodeck complete with leather seats etc and for a sensible price.
However SWMBO found out & said no we didn't need another accord... so i didn't tell her when I bought the v-type last year.... which she now drives!
