This is a quick reminder for you guys with the Diesel.

I just want to remind you that you should check your oil every 600miles...yes 600miles....your car could use up to 1 litre or more in that time!

I've had it on very good authority that diesels have been in the dealer with engine problems due to low oil.

I know that sounds like a lot of oil...but its' worth keeping in mind when you fill her up.

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and engine oil

I have just read something interesting...did you diesel owners know that you need to be careful choosing your grade of engine oil for the diesel as you could have problems with the diesel particulate filter.

aparently you need 0w30 C2 or C3 spec oil......

I've heard the same but the 7th gen doesn't have a DPF. I think it's only the 8th gen that does.

To add value and so as not to exclude any Vectra owners but all Autos and Estates (Vectras) have DPF whereas it's completely random for the rest. Some do and sone don't and there's no logic to it. For more amazing facts just pm me :)

Wonder if this'll be deleted :)

luckily ,my beast do not use oil at the moment.
But I still keep cheking every few k

same here mine(facelift)not problem with oil(finger's crossed)..... bit wierd withe vectra scenerio though... cj what other great knowledege you hiding..... :)

Good Info Alnug, just went to check my oil lol. All is fine and it never really burns any oil.
My Passat use to burn more oil

I think nearly every diesel has DPF now thats whats putting me off updating my car at the moment they seem nothing but hassle

As an ex BOBBY, we checked w.o.t. every time we took over a vehicle. W WATER, O OIL, T TYRES. plus the wheel nuts, now you know why plod motors don't have wheel trims.

I thought plod motors didn't have wheel trims cos the chavs had nicked them!

Mine seems to be a tad thirsty with the oil. Just thrown another litre(!) in today. Getting the weight Honda recommends is a real PITA over here so I've been chucking in Castrol 5W30 in. ******. Hope it's nit going to cause more hassle.

I wouldnt if it was my car.

Agree with Andy here Rob and why is the car using all that oil have you got a problem or a leak.

Supposedly this first diesel Engine did use some oil within the first 10,000 miles. You shouldn't have a problem after this but a fair few engines were replaced on warranty with pretty low miles. If your car has done over 20k and losing oil then there must be a leak somewhere so worth gettting it checked out

I got my car about 6 months ago, mines used 2.5 litres of oil in the last 6 months, they can use quite a bit of oil, as stated in the handbook. I did a fair bit of research before getting mine & this point was raised on a few sites. I think some do use more oil than others, maybe down to driving styles or the type of driving you do i.e stop start city driving. I fully checked the engine top & bottom no leaks, bone dry. The Honda service book states ' to check oil level everytime you fill up with fuel'.
I'm due to give mine a full service in the next few weeks, it's first since I bought it maybe the oil usage will reduce.

Honda reccomends 0w-30 oil, however when mine was serviced they only used 10w-40 oil,

I use mobile 1 0-40 as i found 5l for £30 at costco :D, as i do a lot of millage 30+ K per year, oil change is very expensive so may need to use cheaper oil and change every 6k

In terms of burning oil, i dont need to top up much however i check every week

Gulam, please read around then make up your own mind. 0W30 ONLY on the diesel.

^ I dont recommend you do that Gulam. Ok , so you might save a few quid at costco with the oil, but you may find you spend 100x more due to this later on mate. BTW, I'm not telling you what to do, its your car at the end of the day.

Agree with the guys, especially with that mileage, plus you will get better fuel economy using the 0w-30.

Unfortunately we have seen first hand time and time again issues using a heavier grade oil.

You may not be able to see it quite yet, but when you have done a few more posts, you should see a traders section and affiliates section. In there is a trader called Lubetech, who is providing a great deal to forum members, which effectively makes the oil for a change around £23. It comes in 25l barrels which are really quite small, similar size to those found in Costco, which I seem to recall are about 20L

I topped mine up a couple of weeks ago (0-30) - this was the first time since it's last oil change about 8k ago - so can't complain about oil consumption! :)

Dunno if anyone still reads this thread, but my 54 plate diesel accord just underwent a major service at Honda. I took my own 0-30 oil for them to use only to be told that as my car doesn't have a dpf, the oil would be too thin and they only use that on later cars with them. They said 5-30 is the correct oil to use in cars without a dpf. I didn't argue too hard I have to admit, but I did say that 0-30 was the oil of choice for just about everybody and that it was written in my handbook. He just repeated that yes for cars with a dpf 0-30 was the right oil. For cars without it was too thin.

Thoughts?

He's talking out of his A-ss and I wouldent go back there.
5w 30 won't kill your engine but it's not the recomended oil for these cars.

Hi Brett, this was at john banks in Cambridge and he was the lead mechanic so I didn't argue thinking he knew what he was saying. Having investigated a little more I can see that he was indeed wrong so that's the last time they will get their hands on my car. I find it quite incredible that Honda dealers don't know what they're talking about. Aren't these guys supposed to be the experts? What ticks me off even more is that I could have got it done a lot cheaper somewhere else and they would've used my oil. Unbelievable.

There are good dealers and not so good dealers this is life im afraid. As i said 5w 30 wont kill the car but its not the recommended oil.So a lesion to be learned i think thanks for the feedback Paul.

Looking through the forum it seems most dealers like to prescribe the wrong grade so I won't be using any of them, I'll stick with my local independ6ent, I think.

So can I expect any help from Honda UK over this issue? I notice that others have tried and failed in the past. I can also expect to use more fuel now?

All i will say is iv had calls from HUK in the past after a dealer sevice asking to rate the service. If you get such a call then kindly let them no of your concerns.

Hey guys and gals.

Hope everyone is doing well.
I have a question to ask you tech. minded and mechanical minded folk out there in Type Accord land.

I drive a 06 Honda Accord Icdti. It's got 64k on the clock and has had a service about 6 - 7 months ago.
I drive roughly 16 miles/day, in city type traffic.

Today when I got into my car the acceleration in 1st gear felt quite heavy.
In general though through the rest of the gears acceleration feels sort of the same.
Also, I've noticed twice now that in first gear when accelerating very slowly the car almost feels like it wants to cut out. it jerks very subtley.
I've also felt this subtle jerk in 3rd gear around 2k rpm.

I spoke to a friend of mine who used to be a mechanic and he recons it's some sort of little pipe on the rear of the engine. I've not tampered with it at all, but this is starting to worry me now.
Any suggestions as to what it could be?
I honestly hope it's not expencive and that its just something that can be fixed with out any hasstle.

Advise is most welcome.
Cheers.

ive been using 5w 30 and for the last few services its been carlube i change the oil every six month regardless of miles and do a major once a year air, fuel etc and i have now hit over 150k on my 07 plate diesel tourer. The only fault it has ever had since new from 2007 was a problem with the rear wiper which was repaired on warranty, So my advice would be whether you use 0w 30 or 5w 30 if you change regular it should not matter.

I would half agree with that, and I would also say that 5w30 on its own will not kill your engine. In fact mine ran on 5w30 for the first 28k miles of it's life.

However switching to 0w30 made the economy rise, the car felt smoother and quieter and there is a reason Honda recommends 0w/30 to its dealer network for ICTDI cars. Bearing in mind the importance of oil in your turbo diesel engine, why compromise?

0w 30 is a better oil no doubt i was thinking of using it on my next service in july, but i change the oil twice a year and ive reched just over 150k with out any problems. So i'm not sure if there's any point in changing oil 5 years in and a 150k later might just stick to 5w 30 does anyone agree or is it worth changing at his point.
