2008 Accord Clutch/Cruise Control Issues

I have read most of the forums and it looks fairly simple job to change the clutch but just like to tell you about my issues and seek advice on setting cruise control switches located on the clutch pedal and pressure plate.

I have a 2008 Accord Diesel and its done 92K without any problems but last week I noticed the clutch was slipping and read the forums which said it could be cruise control issues. Not wanting to change the clutch unless I really had to, I disconnected the cruise control and tried the car. Guess what? I could not make the clutch slip in any gears at any speed. Therefore, I ***ume I have a cruise control problem and not clutch?

Can anyone give me the answers to the following question?

How do I check and adjust the cruise control switches located on the clutch pedal?

If I must change the clutch, how do I load the pressure plate (I can make the tools required)?

Does anyone have sections of the workshop manual to do the two points above?

Thank for your help in advance.

I don't have a Mk8 but I looked at the schematic below. You have one switch (part 7 OR 8) that threads into the clutch pedal chassis and engages with the pedal and therefore the clutch when it's both engaged and released. Make sure it is adjusted and tightened accordingly and then check the resistance while operating the pedal, hopefully it may just be the case that it has fallen out of adjustment.

Your clutch sounds fine when you've disengaged the cruise control so shouldn't need touching. I could be completely mistaken but without a Mk8 manual that's how I'd approach it.

Thank you antdad and I'll check the switches and get back to you.
Thanks again.

Hi antdad
sorry can't seem to download the manual.
Is it possible to accach it to the thread?

Thanks for your help antdad, My car is SE i-CTDI, it was registered in April 2008 but it will have been imported in 2007.
There are two switches on the clutch pedal, if that helps!

Err ok, before I go any further check your log book. Make sure you accurately put the exact model in your car description or signature as I don't think it can be an SE and an icdti, is it a saloon or tourer?

Anyhow same diagnostic method applies, check the switches are positioned correctly and if you have a multimeter check the continuity. Do you use the cruise control, if not why bother and just disconnect it?

I had a look at the cruise control for my own model in the manual and it does have two switches (brake and clutch) where it describes pedal distances and how to diagnose the switches. You need to download the manual and have a look at that if you're going to repair it or find someone who can.

Hi antdad, thank for coming back to me and I have tried everything i know to download the manual but without luck.
Anyway, SE i-CTDI is what's on the log book and its a 4 door saloon and it has two switches on the clutch pedal. Depending on the weather tomorrow, I will try and check them for operation and when they activate. I do use the cruise control but can live without it for a while and see if the clutch preforms as expected.
I'll come back to you on my findings with the switches.
Thank again for your time and help, much appreciated.

Ok, I've had a look at the icdti models of 2007 & 8 in the workshop manual and I cant find a cruise control system with two switches on the clutch, only clutch and brake. The schematic below and above I believe is the correct one for your car and again there aren't two switches on the clutch just one on the clutch and one on the brake but two types of switch that are available for the clutch which is where I was a little confused initially

Have a look through the parts catalogue yourself....

If you really have two clutch switches I really don't know how to help you any further because I can't identify that car/system. You've already diagnosed the clutch is fine when the CC is turned off so the switches either need adjusting or replacing.

Goodluck.

Hi antdad
I managed to look at my car today and there are two switches fitted on the clutch pedal, as perthe attached picture.
My apologies for the rough drawing but it should help with whats happening with the switches.
I think if there is a fault with the switches its switch A which could be engaging too soon. What do you think?

Pedal PositionVoltage Reading
Switch AFully at top0
Switch ASlight pressure 12
Switch BApprox. 25-30mm from bottom of travel12
Switch B5mm further travel 0

Trial and error...as I said I just can't find the settings/distances for your set up in the workshop manual so I really don't know nor do I know how these switches are supposed to work. You could slacken off switch A half a turn and see if it makes a difference sure.

Fahad says in this thread that it might be just a case of taking up any slack between the pedal and the switch in this thread but switch A appears to be engaged immediately with little pressure as you have recorded.

What I'd like to know is what are the voltages for both switches A & B along the pedal's full length of travel from zero to fully depressed. Do your readings suggest switch B ONLY activates 25mm from bottom of travel and then 5mm of further travel and nowhere else? Who knows maybe it's faulty, they are clearly not the same switches and it would be good to know the part numbers. Why do you need two switches instead of one? How do you operate the CC under normal conditions?

Without access to right manual/diagram/instruction I'd get hold of Honda and see if they can locate your car type with your system, phone them up and ask for replacement switches and see if they can locate your vehicle with your type of CC. Could be me but I can't, maybe because it's an import. Where are you based and where was the car imported from, is it RH or LHD?

Have you looked in the parts catalogue below to find your car/diagram, get the chassis number for reference that could be helpful. Otherwise you and I are ****ing in the wind.

Good morning antdad
Thanks for your input and having a spacial car is a pain!!!
The reading you wanted:

Pedal PositionSwitchVoltage
At top without any pressure appliedA0
At top without any pressure appliedB12
Fully pressed to bottomA12
Fully pressed to bottomB0

I hope this give you some clue as to what may be happening, sorry I don't have part numbers for the switches but I know the full history of car and its never had any work carried out apart from Honda and nothing on the clutch and I don't want to take the switches off the car and distrurb the current setting.

Taking every think into account and reading the forums, I think there are only a number of options without replacing the clutch.

1. Just live without the cruise control and see if it start slipping again.

2. Adjust the switch A to allow slightly more pedal travel before it engages. I think switch A turns off cruise control and could be riding the clutch.

What do you think?

What happens in between zero and full travel of pedal for both switches 25%, 50%, 75% of travel?

Trial and error... slacken off half a turn and see how it goes.

If you're prepared to run without CC what difference does it make if you remove the switches?

Until you can properly identify this car and it's system in a workshop manual where the setup of pedal/distances is very precise because the switches appear to working as they should I don't know what else to suggest other than adjust half a turn and see or disconnect the CC entirely. As I keep saying identify this car and the system by whatever means then you can find the correct diagnostics and settings because I don't know how it's supposed to work and neither do you.

Give Honda a call and see if they have a record of your model and in particular these switches, that might give us a lead.

Hi antdad
Thanks for your time and for the time being I'll run the car without CC and see if the clutch starts slipping.
If it does not slip in teh next say 500 miles then I'll adjust the switch A.
Will keep you posted.
Thanks again
