I have a 2003 2.0 petrol with the auto box and looking to change the oil.

I'm taking it that I can just take out the drain plug, empty it and then it has the large dip stick bung hole that I'm guessing is the filler?

Other than that, how do I know when it's full/how much oil do I need, had a Google and it's all rather random. I have 3 litres of Honda ATF so I'm hoping I have enough but if anyone knows for sure I'd appreciate the help. Thanks... James.

Honda boxes typically take 7-8 litres in total but you can’t drain it all simply from the drain plug. A normal oil change will remove around 3-3.5 litres and that’s what you’re refilling (either via the fill hole or the dipstick tube). You’re not actually changing the entire ATF in a standard oil change, the idea being that you’re regularly introducing fresh fluid into the overall mix to keep it going.

To drain the whole system requires removal of the gearbox and draining the torque converter. There is also another method which involves disconnecting the transmission cooler pipes and cranking the engine to pump it out but it’s really not necessary to remove it all for regular maintenance.

Cool, thank you, I had read that and I'm only doing it as part of ongoing maintenance, it's never been changed since we've had it, hopefully I'll be ok with the 3 litres I have then.

How do I check I haven't overfilled? Is it a case of just topping up a little at a time and checking the dipstick? Thanks.

Measure how much comes out and refill the same volume, then warm up the engine and gearbox, cycle through from D to N to R a few times to let it fill the torque converter and check the dipstick while it’s warm to get a measure.

Awesome, thank you
