Anti-Roll Bar D Bush Replacement

Hi Guys,

As you know I have the TEIN coilovers fitted on my Accord and since fitting these I always noticed a spongy type of knock from the rear nearside. It was only there occasionally and worse on speed bumps... so after some inspection I noticed the Anti Roll Bar D Bush was worn from the edge which was causing this noise & im glad it wasn't too worn otherwise I would have got my first ever advisory or even a fail on the MOT!

So today got these from Honda, cost under £4 (inc VAT) each so at that price I just bought a pair replace both sides...



Now it was time to jack up the back end of the car, I used an ordinary jack and lifted it from the rear jacking point and got out the jack stands, make sure the car is safe and use a jack stand on both sides as well as a safety block/brick on the front wheels...





A handheld lamp is useful here and you will need a rachet & socket size 12 with a extension to make it easier for you to remove the two bolts as shown below, also beware they are very tough to remove but with a slight tighten and then back anti clockwise to loosen makes it easier :)



Bracket removed, two bolts...



This then reveals the actual rubber D Bush and this just simply clips off the bar, there is already a split in the bush for this...



The bar without the bush on...



The old bush VS the new one, you can notice the worn edge which caused the occasional knock and spongy noise...



New bush just simply clipped on, make sure the open edge of the bush the split is facing towards the back of the car this is the correct way to fit this...



Then the bracket is back on after some cleaning of the bolts, bracket & the base...





The other side is done the same way here are before and after pics below, just a bit awkward to get to as the exhaust is here but not rocket science...





Now took the car for a quick test drive over some speed bumps and few corners and all is working 100% and the noise has gone :) so just under £8 for a pair from Honda and 30mins DIY I hope this saves some of our members some labour costs :) it is very simple guys :)

I did call up Bradford s****estone Honda today to get a price, they wanted nearly £5 more for the pair and they said it takes around an hour to fit and they wouldn't charge a book in fee (currently £45 to diagnose the fault, they won't take my word for it haha) as a gesture of goodwill and the hourly labour rate is £75 :-O

LOL

I would never use them anyway but i was really curious about this and here are the pocket hurting findings!!!

That's perfect timing as I reckon mine are worn. For that much, it's worth replacing them as a matter of course.

Your guide got me thinking. I've noticed a knocking noise from the rear as well when going slow over bumps. Last night took a look at the anti-roll bar and although the bushes look ok, I could actually shake the bar and make it rattle by hand :eek: What's even stranger is that the car just passed MOT on Saturday :eek: :eek: So I'll def be following your guide very soon :D

JAV, do you feel safe using that jacking point ? i have always gone to use it then whimped out and jacked up on the sills instead.

I followed the guide and did mine this morning without any difficulty. The only thing I found was that the bolts were a little tight becasue of all the baked on dirt under there (the previous owner lived in the countryside and most of it seems to be attached the the underside of my car) so I cleaned the bolts and tightened them back up a couple of times to clean the threads before putting the new bushes on. Most of the noise from the back has gone now too.

I've had a look but cannot see a guide to do the front ones and I'm ***uming they're similar - has anyone done them?

Great write-up Jav - exactly why TA is a must-have resource. Can I ask what mileage your car was on when you did this work? And do you think the coilovers would have made a difference to the bushes' lifespan?

Great write up Jav - top work fella.

Suspected I had the same problem & took the opportunity to get Bristol Honda to have a look whilst my car was in. Turns out it's the anti roll bar links as opposed to the bushes that are on their way. They're £101 for the parts, or £143 fitted.

Any idea how easy they are to replace?
