Hi folks new to this forum but not to the accord as i had a 6th gen for 11 years. Just traded it in against a 2008 8th gen 2.0 ltr ex auto. Like the car a lot but the gear indicator on the tacho is not working which i find annoying anybody has any ideas on this without replacing the whole console which i guess this is a integral part.

Thanks Dave.

You can test if the indicator lights are ok by using the gauges self-diagnostic
 1. Push and hold the SEL/RESET switch button.
 2. Turn the combination light switch ON.
 3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
 4. Within 5 sec., turn the combination light switch OFF, then ON and OFF again.
 5. Within 5 sec., release the SEL/RESET switch button, and then push and release the button three times repeatedly.
The following indicators blink:
A/T gear position indicator, ABS indicator, brake system indicator, charging system indicator, cruise control indicator, cruise main indicator, high beam indicator, immobilizer indicator, lights-on indicator, low oil pressure indicator, low fuel indicator, low oil pressure indicator, malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), seat belt indicator, security indicator, side airbag cutoff indicator, SRS indicator, VSA activation indicator, VSA indicator, EPS indicator, M/T shift up indicator, M/T shift down indicator, turn signal indicator, front fog light indicator, rear fog light indicator, CMBS indicator, LKAS indicators, ACC indicators, and message indicator.

To exit the diagnostic, turn the ignition switch off.

It's a starting point, if that doesn't make the light come on then the cluster needs to come out. If the light does come on then there's a fault in the wiring.

Thanks a lot for that diagnostic test. I tried it this afternoon and after a few attempts got it to work. Good news is the gear indicator display came on so the fault is elsewhere. Will take the car to a local auto electrical place as i want to get it fixed, if it had been a problem with the console the cost would probably have been to high to bother .

Thanks again Dave.

if the gear changes work ok then it might be a comms issue into the gauge control module, which could require specialist Honda diagnostic equipment (aka Honda HDS).

Ok thanks for that will book it into a Honda dealer and see if they can sort it out. Will let you know the result. Thanks again for your help.

Unfortunately, on something like this you might have to. If you were near to me I might be able to find something using my HDS clone, but this could be difficult to diagnose if there are no codes. I'd start by asking them how much they charge for plugging in their HDS. If they find some codes that are relevant, make a note of the codes and what they would try next.

My guess is that they will find codes, and that it will be either
 • F-CAN communication line error
 • Gauge control module defective
 • PCM defective
 • Transmission range switch defective
They may try software updates, if that doesn't work the cheapest will be the last one above, otherwise it will get expensive.

Update on this problem. According to the Honda dealer the gear indicator only works when the transmission is in S (SEQUENTIAL) and you use the paddles to change gear. Not having had the car very long i hadn't used the paddles, but i have tried this and the indicator works. Not come across this before as other autos i have driven have all had a auto gear indicator. Is this right or are they wrong?

Sounds a reasonable proposition, is there a similar description in the owner's manual ?
