Hi guys
It's been a while since I was last here and have come with cap in hand to beg for forgiveness.

I have a bit of a quandary with the transmission in the fact that every now and then I get a noise that sounds like the gears are loud under load ie when on the accelerator and changing up through the gears from 1st through to 3rd I think. The noise is as if for a moment the gears are louder, not like they are crunching and grinding just loud gears. They feel fine and normal to change through.

My first thought was it's the gearbox on the way out ie diff or something like that, but as it is intermittent and normally after a long journey I wasn't so sure.

When parking up the other night I noticed when turning the wheel left there was a bit of cracking noise, so instantly I'm think CV or driveshaft? So yesterday I had a quick look underneath the car and noticed there was a bit of play on both the inner CV that enter the gearbox o/s a bit worse, they both rattle a bit.

I should mention that I started to get clutch slip about 4000 miles ago, but this is only under harder acceleration in the higher gears and doesn't happen if driven gently. Had the clutch and dual mass flywheel changed at 75000 and it's now done 130000.

So my question is would worn CVs / driveshaft be the cause of the intermittent louder gear noise? I should also mention as I did notice on occasion it was happening when cornering for example changing down to enter a bend in the road then back on the throttle the noise will sometimes appear.

I'd very much appreciate any help and opinion from the community as I am struggling make a diagnosis / decision on what to do next.

I think I should have posted this in faults so apologies if I've dropped the ball.

Thanks very much

Have you changed the gearbox oil?
Hi thanks for the response

No I've not replaced it recently and it could possibly help, but I'm not 100% that this would be the problem.

I've had another look underneath at the driveshafts and confirmed that there is movement on the inner CVs where they enter the gearbox. I'm able to wiggle the CVs which rattle a little and they move a little left, right, up, down and in and out of the gearbox slightly. I must stress this is the inner CVs where they enter the box and not where the driveshafts enter the inner CVs, which I know are supposed to move.

My thinking was that if there is lateral movement in and out of the gearbox, when cornering for example this may pull or push the CVs enough to make the spines mesh in the diff, or at least place an uneven load on the diff every now and again and cause the noise, as it's kind of a meshing noise.

The noise is not constant and has only happened 2 or 3 times.

Intermittent problems can drive you nuts.. Do you mind being asked some obvious questions like have the axles and CV's ever been changed?

Hi Richard,
I don't mind being asked at all. No the driveshafts and CV's haven't ever been changed. The car has covered 130000 miles and generally been most reliable.
You're not wrong when you say it drives you nuts

You're probably onto something with the driveshafts:
Any noises with the car jacked up spinning the wheel?

I've not had it up in the air yet, when I checked underneath it was whilst all four wheels were on the ground.

I'm not really suffering with vibration, except for at very high speed, which has been like this for a number of years, so doesn't seem out of the ordinary for me.

I'll have to get it up in the air and have a more thorough look. I'm just hoping it's not the gearbox.

OK next obvious question.. are your brake pads wearing evenly?
As far as I'm aware the brakes are fine, but I'll take a look probably at the weekend as I'm replacing the lower power steering cooler pipe that is leaking.
