Hello Guys. Was pulling in to a car park the other day to do some shopping and i noticed a very odd noise that i had heard once or twice before being emitted from the engine bay. i quicly stopped and recorded itso i could get your opinions.

anyway, the noise is a screach being emmited from the aux belt ? It has only come on 2 or 3 times before and has quickly stopped. Sometimes when the AC kicks in it starts, or can start when im just driving along normally. As you will see from the video i did nothing to stop the noise..

Any help would be fab as the car should not make this noise !

BTW when i open the bonnet, turn your speakers down!!!
Thanks :)

Adam

it sounds like alternator bearing is saying bye bye.. but let's wait what others gonna say.

Bearings tend to whine or rumble but not screech. I would say it needs an aux belt and tensioners checked for correct tolerances. It might need the belt re-routing as per Honda revised guidelines..

I did think the belt was a little tight, but its odd how it happenes very rarely and its almost impossible to 'kick start' in to action.

thanks for your responces guys

Mine sounds just like that as well, and is just as random.
Does it sound like it's coming from the top of the engine, around the power steering pump. I posted about this the other day. http://typeaccord.co.uk/forum/topic/6477-power-steering-pump-bearing/page__fromsearch__1

Mine is definitely coming from around the power steering pump area. I'm hoping Alnug will see this post and let us know why his pump was changed.

Alnug has a 2.4 Type S..

I wanted to know whether the pump was changed due to a similar noise as described above. He mentioned in his thread that he went to the dealer thinking it was the belt, but they diagnosed a fault with the pump. Diesel or petrol the principle is the same. It's possible that Honda uses the same pump.

thats very interesting Rob, im slightly put at rest that im not the only one that gets this randomly.

has you car got a pulley inbetween the powersteering pump and alternator? i have not heard of powersteering pumps going but its fairly regular that the front alternator bearing goes because of the extra strain this pulley puts on the alternator. honda no longer supply the same sized aux belt, instead you remove the pulley and install a shorter belt in a different configuration. without looking i cannot be 100% certain but i would take a good guess at you needing a new alternator bearing set. try to spray a small ammount of WD40 onto each pully starting with the power steering pump while the noise is there. if the damage is bad enough it may not quieten the noise but 9 times out of 10 you can pin point the pully by doing this. other than that you need to remove the belt and turn each pully by hand to check them.

^^ That's what I meant by belt re-routing.

thanks for the fantastic replies.
My only problem is the noise is so rare and random that i would be hard pushed to be stationary with a can of wd40 in my hand! would it be an idea to upload a picture of the auxbelt to see if it had been done or not?

I honestly thought my dealer would have done to re route when they changed my timing chain... but who knows

How is your aircon compressor turning.? You should be able to turn it manually by sticking your hand down and turning it with your hand. It should move fairly freely. If not it may be beginning to seize. Especially if you have not serviced your aircon for some time and it is running low on lube. May be worth checking especially if the noise is related to your aircon being used.

If the noise happens and your aircon is off then disregard this.

Hi all, this is probably all resolved now but I would thought I would share my experience anyway. I had this intermittent noise - oddly enough when pulling into a store car park! Took it to my local dealer. They couldnt replicate it. I also had noticed that my air con was not very good. They re-gassed it and within 10 minutes the compressor (dump valve?) had ejected all the gas ans it was making the noise again, the noise was apparently the valve opening and closing. A new compressor did the job for me.

Hi All

Thought I'd resurrect this - my 2006 icdti 96k miles FHSH has been soldiering on without major issue for a while now hence lack of posts.

Anyway, currently suffering the same horrendous intermittent screech as the OP, car is with Newton Honda who reckon it needs a new AC compressor as they are advising that there is a noise there all the time - waiting for a price..... I'm not convinced they've replicated the noise I'm referring to as it is not continuous.

AC is fine, blows cold (I've never topped it up) and is on all the time come rain or shine. The noise is not affected by turning the AC off/on and it comes on completely randomly whether the car is hot or cold and disappears just as suddenly as if switched...

Any thoughts anyone.

Cheers

Ouch.

Dude, I'm sure there's loads on here for self diagnosis of Aircon issues. Once you find it, get the part you need from a breakers and fit it yourself. That's a crazy price.

Thanks for the reply.

Honda Newton basically took the belt off and manually tested the pulleys - they got some play in the AC pulley and are recommending a replacement AC Compressor...

I've searched on here for AC compressor faults and not a huge amount has come up regarding actual replacement. Anyone direct me to something?

Can the ***embly be split ie. can I just replace bits (pulley bearings) - Honda quoted over £1200 for the part alone!

Anyone suggest where I can get a reconditioned compressor - google doesn't seem to throw up any AC specialists in my area.

I'm waiting for a price back from an Indy.

TIA

Ade
