Hi
my 2004 2.4 ex petrol manual starts to wobble from front end when accelerating between 40ish/50 to 60 mph then seems to stop you can feel it at your feet on both sides of car, seems to do it when going up hills more, maybe when under more strain, the problem has a few local garages stumped, but problem really just started last year when I had a genuine Honda clutch fitted by a local garage, ive changed a lot of items on the cars front end and makes no odds, could it be the clutch wasn't lined up properly etc, , im not mechanically minded so sorry if I seem so ***ue, anyone any ideas, I took it back to the garage where clutch was fitted, the guy who done the work had left so couldn't get no info from him , the replacement mechanic took the car in and checked it over for a few hours but couldn't find anything wrong, they thought it was a buckled wheel but had them all checked and just to prove it to him I got him to swap front wheels over to back still the same, this is nearly a year now and its still doing it, I cant help think that its something to do with the clutch that was fitted , anyone any ideas

Have you had a good alignment done, Hunter machines are recommended for the 7th gen?

Check the obvious first -

1. wheel balancing - but you did move the wheels around
2. Aligntment - as Mr Honda says
3. Drive shafts - is it only when accelerating?
3. Shocks/bushings/springs - are these all good?

thanks for your replys, yes it seems to be only when accelerating so it could well be the drive shafts, so is there a way of getting these checked?

A mechanic should be able to lift the car and check these for play. Really what he is looking for is is one end of the shaft is held tight does the other end move slightly. <edit> on a rotational basis :)

BTW - what mileage is on the car?

^^ nothing?

mileage is around 85,000 , had all the front wishbones replaced in past couple of years, passenger side has had cv joint replaced , infact almost all joints top and bottom on front end has been replaced, when I took it back to garage where thr clutch was done the guy took my car in fro a few hours and said he checked everything and couldn't find a problem , he said he checked drive shafts and they were running fine,

Was the inner shaft checked?? Normally it's he bearing in this that can go. Also, you'll find many reference on here to the same issue when the shafts were changed all was good again.

not too sure what they checked , all they said was the drive shafts seemed fine, is there anywhere that anyone can recommend for buying the complete drive shafts? my local motor factors get the recon ones for 102 quid plus vat, plus 15 quid surcharge until I hand old ones back in, also I take it that it would be a wise move to replace both sides , oh also I take it that gearbox gets drained ? so Honda dealer for the box oil?

I had a slight wobble from the front end but everything checked out, until I went replace the front tyres.
It turned out a pothole had put a slight buckle in one of my alloys, it was only apparent through balancing the wheel or under load where it felt exaggerated.

if youve ruled out all the above suggestions, try rotating your wheels

I took my car to tyre place and they checked all wheels, also swapped front to rear and still there

It will be the Drive shaft, and more than likely the NS one, i've had this wobble feeling on the front for sometime now, no one knew what it was when first checked but through time and more wear the ns driveshaft has very noticeable play in it, and mine needs changing, next thing on my already busy list.

Am I right in thinking the NS driveshaft is a complete shaft but the OS has an inner and outer?

Yep the OS connects via a half shaft (gearbox is on the left of the car)

Usually I would say tyres but because its only when your accelerating im almost certain thats driveshaft. I had the same problem in my escort & the whole car including the gearstick used to wobble on acceleration, as Mark said most likeley the NS one - an insurance approved technician once explained to me how that's the driveshaft that provides most of the power to the wheels but he could have just been making that up.. Good luck!

thanks folks for your replys, yeah gonna change it asap, next question, is it wise to buy from local motor factors or is genuine Honda a must, oh also am I right in saying the gearbox will have to be drained? if so am I right in saying that the gearbox oil must be bought from a Honda dealer?
cheers

Genuine is preferred. Some people have put pattern part shafts onto the car and the wobble remained but once replace with Genuine Honda the wobbling went. However, I've seen the Blueprint part fitted and solve the wobbling on other cases!

Re the ATF fluid, generally yes you will lose the fluid and should only use Genuine Honda ATF Z1 fluid. It's not that expensive and it'll give you piece of mind (get a crush washer for the drain plug too)

ok thanks for that info, I shall try and source blueprint then as genuine is way too expensive for me at this time, fingers crossed

anyone know where I could source a blueprint drive shaft for my model of car? thanks

Normally a motor factor will source this for you. Put you post code in here and I'll tell you - http://www.blueprint-adl.com/vehicleowners/

I see on Ebay there's a few genuine ones from a breakers yard (if you want to take a gamble)

My dad had exactly this on his 2.2 CDTi CRV earlier this year. Changed tyres, tracking, wishbones, etc. Turned out it was the inner CV joints. Horrendously expensive from Honda (£250 a side) but solved the issue. Car drives like new again.

Very common issue on the CRV and the replacement parts are 'up rated' compared to the original factory installed items, so should last more than 60k unlike the originals! I'd not heard of this on the 2.4 petrol though?

thanks everyone for your replies, I am still trying to source a replacement passenger side drive shaft and going by what ive read it looks like blueprint would be the best one next to genuine Honda, thing is I just cant find anyone with a blueprint one for my car, anyone help?
