Accord 2.2 i-dtec
Hi All, Been looking through the forum for a little while now to see if any of the issues I have are documented. Coming to the conclusion that I need to post so ... here goes...

I bought a 2009 2.2 i dtec tourer about a year ago and I've had nothing but trouble with multiple parts of the car. It currently has 199000 miles and the oil looks very clean. I've looked at the DPF and it has been deleted, the CAT is still there but I am unsure if the EGR has been blanked yet.

The car has a ticking noise when accelerating and a lot of blue smoke on cold start up. I suspect that these are two independent problems. The latter issue is probably valve stem oil seals but I am open to this being related to the ticking issue.

The noise has been getting progressively worse over the past few weeks. When the engine is at idle or the car is stationary with engine revs raised the noise does not seem to be there. So the noise seems to be there when the engine is under load.

I've had a scan tool connected to the car and looked at live data. I found that the noise seems to start when the EGR valve is closed.

My current plan is to replace the timing chain and valve stem oil seals whilst checking the top end of the engine over for wear and tear. Does anyone have any idea of what this issue could be before I go any further?

Could be a leaking injector seal but would be there even when not under load. You probably need to try and isolate if it’s from the engine itself or an ancillary like a drive belt pulley.

Blue smoke would indicate oil burning, does it use much? Never seen one needing valve stem seals, more likely a failed turbo. If it’s had a dpf problem, it’s possible it damaged the turbo.

I've had a look at the injectors and there is no carbon visible near any of the seals.

I've had a look at the turbo and it looks ok. Minimal shaft play and moving freely. Obviously this isn't conclusive but it has done at least 15000 miles (in my service) with the DPF removed. There is some oil pooling in front of the compressor side of the turbo but this seems to be coming from the rocker cover vent. I had ***umed this was to be expected as there is a normal amount of crankcase pressure. Is this normal?

I had the intercooler off around 3000 miles ago when I replaced the gearbox (and clutch/flywheel) due to failed gearbox bearing. There was not enough oil in the pipework to signify failed turbo seals IMHO.

If I remove the cap from the rocker cover there is no noticeable tapping sound at idle.

It uses some oil. Difficult to say how much as I have just replaced the oil cooler and oil/filter so trying to figure out how is being burnt vs the amount which ended up in the water.

You could try strapping a mobile phone with a voice recorder app under the bonnet and move it around to locate the noise.

Interesting idea. Have you tried it?

My feeling is that the wind noise would overpower the microphone. I have used vibration sensing equipment in the past for this but I dont really have access to this at the moment.

My suspicion is that the issue is intake manifold/egr related based on how the problem presents but I am unsure of how the system should be working due to not knowing what has or has not been done with respect to the dpf delete.

Try blanking your egr, see what it does.
