Hi all,

I've replaced the discs on the rear axle on my Accord Tourer.

Once everything was of I found that the brake disc shields on both sides had rusted away, the entire shield was just barely staying in place by a few inches of metal left.

I didn't have new shields at hand so I cleaned and removed some rust that was in the way, mounted the new discs and put everything back in order.

But now there is a scratching sound when I turn, it seems that the new disks are grinding against the rusted shields.

The disc and the shield are designed so they enclose the entire handbrake ***embly and protects it from water etc.

I was shocked when I found the price for two new shields from the dealer, even with my discount (I used to work for Honda Nordic). Seems that the entire handbrake ***embly mounts on the shield itself, that's why it's so damn expensive.

And I can not find any after market shields either.

Can I cut away the shields and just keep the mounting? Or will that cause the handbrake to seize due to rust?

Regards
P-H

I have pictures of the rusted shields, it's not pretty, will put them up here ASAP.

Sorry for any bad english.

Hi. Mine are badly rusted too. I had the same problem - discs catching the shields.Managed to bend them clear. Not looked into it any further tho. Will watch your replies with interest!

I also had this problem it sounds similar when a stone is stuck between the disc and shield. I bet them back with a long screwdriver.

The rear disks held less than a year, I guess they got warped because of the heat from rubbing against the shield. Or maybe because stuck pistons in the rear calipers, or maybe both...

So I ordered two new disks (again, but it was less than having a metal shop resurface the old disks, go figure?!), new calipers, brake pads and shoes for the parking brake together with the accessories (springs etc.) for the parking brake.

I removed the old warped disks and could break away the shield without any tools. Found that the shield itself is spot welded onto a mounting plate of some sort, where the parking brake ***embly is mounted. That was still intact, a lot of surface rust, but still solid metal.

I used a Dremel to get rid of the remaining spot welds and a large file to remove as much rust as possible from the mounting plate before installing the new disks. I even painted the disks and caliper brakets :)

I didn't replace the parking brake shoes because MaRIS was down at the moment so I couldn't get my hands on the proper instructions.

I adjusted the parking brake shoes with the cog (found in the third picture) so that they barely touched the drum inside the disk, but I still need to pull the parking brake lever to far up for the parking brake to really work. I really don't understand why. As I said, I didn't have access to the instructions so I don't know if I did it the correct way. Anybody?

There's an adjuster nut for the handbrake lever under the centre console, before adjusting the cogs in the drum, you should completely slacken the nut for the handbrake lever beforehand. Then do the adjustment using the cog on each side (as you have done), then use the adjuster nut for the handbrake lever to remove slack in the cables.

Regarding the disc shields, they are still intact on my Accord, but I know of two other marques where they were removed and the car passed the MOT in this country. If/when the disc shields become weak on my Accord, I will be removing them too. IMO the disc shields don't really help very much, if at all.

Yes those backing plates are £90 each and changing them looks like a pain in the wang.

All in all 7th gen rear brakes have turned out to be a bit of an epic fail.

The brake disc shields were the first things to go to the trash when I bought the car two years ago. Both were already rusted and catching and squeeling, just put them out of their misery :)
