After a couple of failed re-gasses last summer I'm bowing to the inevitable and replacing the corroded mess that was once the air con condenser. Honda want £400 just for the part but I've seen pattern ones for about £100 so I'm prepared to take a chance. Removal looks fairly simple but are the pipe connections/fittings special in any way? Do I need any specialist tools? Anyone done this as a DIY? Looks like it can be done without the bumper having to come off.

I'll get new seals as well but looking on Lings it's difficult to tell which ones are for the condenser, any ideas? I know you shouldn't release air congas into the atmosphere but I can guarantee there's nothing left in this one, last year's re-gasses lasted about two days. I think I'll put a bit of mesh in the lower bumper intake to try and protect it as well.

Thanks.

I did this recently on the wife's Honda FRV which is an almost identical set up to the Accord.

It's very easy and you just need regular tools. Just ensure there is a good tight seal of the rubber o rings and just use some common sense really.

Have you identified the condensor as being the culprit? Has a leak test identified this?

I would also recommend changing the receiver dryer unit at the same time as your existing one will almost certainly have lost it's efficiency. It's designed to store the gas on the high pressure side but also take the moisture out of the system. The moment you open up the system, the Receiver Dryer draws in moisture from the atmosphere and you effectively kill it..

When changing it, make sure the Receiver Dryer is the last thing you bolt on to minimise any time it's left open and exposed. They're less than £30 delivered so well worth doing and you'll preserve the life of your compressor.

I got my unit from http://www.adrad.co.uk/

Thanks Fahad, I'll add the receiver dryer to the shopping list, leak test last year confirmed the condenser, it's literally crumbling the bottom.

I've done loads of minor engine work on lots of different cars, but this was the first time I'd attempted anything relating to the AC. It was much easier than I thought to be honest.

Nice link and the prices seem around those of ebay, will be bookmarking that! :)

The aircon worked when I bought the car but has now stopped. I was hoping it just needs a regas but when I looked at the condenser it was full of holes where the fins are missing!!

The bumper seems quite exposed in front of the condenser, it's the same on our Civic, which also needs doing. Has anyone meshed this to protect it, did it help?

The time has come to sort this out but I have a couple of questions if anyone can help.

If I order this one from Adrad, which has the same part number as Lings should I measure the old one first, how accurate is their site? Can the condenser be measured on the car (I've not looked yet)?

Does it come with new O rings, it looks like I need 3 and is there anything special about them if I just buy a mixed selection, anyone know the exact size?
