As I mentioned in my noob post, I'm planning on fitting a stainless exhaust system sometime in the near future, but I have a few questions:

1) Are there any "off the shelf" stainless exhausts for a 2002 1.8 Accord, I have looked and can only seem to see them for sale for the Type R and the 2.2/2.3
2) Will a Type R or 2.2/2.3 system fit?
3) Does anybody have a 4-2-1 stainless manifold fitted? If so, how does it affect exhaust noise?

I don't want a noisy exhaust, I have had 2 different brands fitted to my previous ford escorts, first was a mongoose system, second a magnex. Both added a little bit of a bassy note to the exhaust, nice and quiet at low RPM or cruising and just enough grunt under throttle.

Soooo, basically, can anybody recommend what make of exhaust I should go for if I don't want it to sound "phat" and whether or not a stainless manifold will help/hinder this. There are a couple of places locally that will whip up a custom system for me for around the same price of a branded system, but I can't be sure what kind of racket a one-off exhaust will make.

Craig have a chat to Shiny he has a lovely system on his car.

Hi Craig,

Just to chime, in the face lift 1.8 already has a 4-2-1 setup. I cant imagine a stainless steel making one bit of difference. A half decent catback is what I would go for. Cheaper than the full set-up which wont make a bit of difference on the 1.8. Plus it leaves you some money to get a nice K+N typhoon. the one for the 2.0 can be adjusted to fit the 1.8 i believe. As far as the ones for Type R and the 2.2/2.3 they will not fit at all. the manifold for want of a better term is inverted compared to the 1.8 all the boltholes are effectively the opposite way around and cannot be machined to fit.

Cheers for the advice, I'm already fitting an AEM intake so won't need a typhoon, I'd probably spend some extra cash on a sports cat, made a real difference on my last motor.I'm thinking that a custom system seems the only real option here, just hope that I can get across my point that I don't want it too loud!

There is no cheap way to tune the 1.8 6th gen Accord.

If you want a fast car sell it and buy the Type R. It's as simple as that. If you want a little extra power, and i'm talking 10bhp if you're lucky then a filter/induction kit and a sports cat is the best way to go.

As for the exhaust go to somewhere like powerflow. They will be able to make up a system for you that will look AND sound like you want it to dude. Tell them you don't want it loud and they will fit the correct back boxes to suit your taste. Just make sure the pipe is 2.5 inch and is mandrel bent mate.

If they fit the system and then it's still to loud for you, tell them and they will sort it for you for no charge, or either a VERY small fee.

Hope this has helped a little, and hasn;t sounded like too much of a negative post mate. B)

I've just been quoted £300 for a cat back system from powerflow, I'm not looking for massive power gains, I know about tuning cars, I'm not the kind of guy who expects to fit a k&n filter and a backbox and get an extra 30bhp! Fitting a stainless exhaust is a must for me, I've had nothing but bad luck with standard exhausts dropping off one me!

My last car had had over a £1000 spent on it and it had gained 23bhp, so I understand the costs in gaining power, but I simply can't justify buying a Type-R as an everyday drive.

£300 is not a bad price.

Did you ask them about the noise levels? They should be able to tailor the noise to exactly what you want. I used to have a dual powerflow on my 2.0 SE and took it back 3 times to get them to change the noise for me

The guy said a 2.5" bore would be quite noisy, so I'll probably go for 2" I'm waiting to hear back about what back boxes they have to offer, I don't want it to sound too phat man! And yeah £300 is pretty good, you'll pay around that for an off the shelf system, so I'm fairly happy, time to get saving!
