Sounds to me like a gearbox/clutch issue. Without removing the gearbox its difficult to give an accurate diagnosis. My first port of call would be to remove the gearbox and inspect the clutch though.
I believe it was over time the noise got worse and worse. I bought the car like this cheap to break for parts. Ive removed the turbo and its in good condition.
