I have the Mk7, the thermostat has no bleed on either side of the container (at least on the i-ctdi). I've had to glue it shut anyway as one of the retaining bolts had sheared off.

Just how noticeable is the sound inside the cabin ? If you have gone to the trouble of changing the flywheel then I would go and have a look at the exhaust and perhaps a failure of the one of the baffles.

For MOT passing on the Tourer (I-ctdi) I use a bit of Solvol autosol. Rub as hard as possible keeping the same bit of towel. Then buff off with one half of the other side, folding over until the debris and damaged plastic is clear of the panel.
